Supposedly in *seaQuest* substantial progress in educational methods
has taken place where children born today will be adequately prepared
for the unreal world of 2032.
For a submersible to be built to the size that is found in that
cancelled program, it would require a economy generating a $40 to 90
trillion planetary GDP to permit such a construction twice.
Even if we don't crash the shaky economy we run today, some major
breakthrough in technology would be necesssary to allow such a economy
with the developing world being largely like the US of 1995 in 2032 as
it was portrayed in that show.

RL>-> That's because TV producers make lousy SF. They think that a show

RL>-> name stars. Never mind that the shows don't make sense, have bad
RL>-> plots, and worse science. If it's bad
RL>-> SF, it's bad TV.
RL>What you say is short but to the point. I agree with you most of the
RL>time on this one. What really makes terrific science fiction or fantasy
RL>has got to be excellent writing. The screenplay. All the visual
RL>effects CAN add impact BUT IT SEEMS TO ME YOU HAVE TO CARE ABOUT THE
RL>CHARACTERS IN SOME WAY AND THIS HAPPENS WHEN THEY ARE NOT JUST CARDBOARD
RL>CHARACTERS.
RL>I think if you look at the original Twilight Zone series or even One
RL>Step Beyond, there were a number of excellent science fiction stories
RL>and virtually no "whizz-bang" special effects and no colour to boot!
RL>I's say your last comment another way: Bad stories ensure bad TV just
RL>as bad stories make for bad movies.
RL>Translating science fiction from novels into the filmed format is and
RL>has alkways been a very tough nut to crack.

More the problem is the inept execution of executive producers to
detect bad writers and writing and get those writers disappeared from
the show.
I feel inept executive producers come from the political "incest"
between prodcuers and most television and cinema production house
executives where the careers and productivity of the executives and
producers are explicitly measured by individual production's profit
margins, and where applicable, beneficial TV ratings
Most television producers and production house executives chose this
occupational field to intentionally and directly *escape* and everyday
working literacy in the sciences and literature.
This community has taken any capacity for concentration spans longer
than five minutes from modern TV viewers. Good Science Fiction and
Science Fantasy *requires* intensely focused concentration to glean the
nuances of the story.
This won't change in the US because meaningful production house
regulation by networks and syndicators is very slight. The regulation of
*networks* and *syndicators* is nonexistant by the US Government.
The exceptional quality of the British productions is due to
meaningful degrees of governmental expectations that producers will
actually be *educuated* sufficiently to regulate technobabble in *Dr.
Who* without assistance from the FidoNet conferences!
European governmental counterparts to the US FCC expect--no,
*require*--educational soundness and literacy in the humanities in
nearly every level of television and cinema production to prevent the
production of poorly conceived and poorly produced television shows.
Producers truly literate in the natural sciences and science fiction
won't happen unless similar expectations for educational excellence is
demanded by viewers and/or enforced by some industry or governmental
body who has the muscle to bring down the dropout refugees who inhabit
the industry today.

Yeah, if we could just get rid of that pesky First Amendment, we *could* have
effective governmental regulation of what's broadcast on television.
