decayed (possibly to other radioactive atoms). If you start with a really
hellish brew, it will take more than one half-life period for it to become
safely approachable. The isotope NEVER becomes stable. It's just that, over
time, enough of the atoms in a given sample will decay that the radiation
produced by that given sample drops to a "safe" level.
BW>The stuff we use in our nuclear
BW>plant actually
BW> half long half live, I beliave from my info about some thousands

Isotopes with long half-lives are less dangerous than those with short
half-lives (all other factors being equal). Plutonium (which is what I'll wager
you're thinking of) is highly toxic as well as being radioactive.
BW>... You can twist perceptions, reality won't budge.
BW>Yeah and what about japan and hiroshima and nagashaki, there

BW>effected, how about since all the nuke bombs being exploded, and
BW>the

BW>bit of
BW>plutonium in there lungs, among other things.
If everyone born today had plutonium in their lungs, everyone born today would
be dead shortly after birth. Your "factoid" is utter and total horse hockey.
Next, what do the long term effects of a weapon system have to do with whether a
power system is relatively safe or not? The ambient radiation levels in
Hiroshima and Nagasaki are currently at normal levels -- any radiation related
deaths that are being recorded at this late date are the result of radiation
exposures on 6 August 1945, 9 August 1945 or shortly thereafter.
BW>Nor have I at any
BW>point
BW>gone for fossil fuels in this debate, so you can save the fossil
BW>argument, I
BW>also don't think that nuclear enerby is such a good idea
BW>either.!!
I suggest that you come back to reality. The current civilization requires
electric power (and lots of it) to survive. We either get it from fossil fuels
or nuclear. The US has decided to go fossil fuel (construction of new nuclear
power plants was effectively halted in this country some time ago). I think
it's a bad call, myself.
And by the by, geothermal, wind, and solar are not viable alternative sources of
power.
BW> concepts that we decide are right. Physics is only theory that
BW>a bunch
BW> of people agree upon, not fact, thories. highschool science
BW>fact, and
BW> definition between theories, facts, and hypothesis.
In that sense, there are no facts, only agreed upon theories. But I'll still
bet on rocks falling down rather than up...

"Strong half life"? Radioactives with long half lives are safer than those with

Because, my dear young lady, the only alternative to nuclear power is fossil
fuel generated power. Since fossil fuel generated power is not only more
limited than nuclear but also more dangerous in the long run, most people have
tried to consider the options available to us. And I, for one, do not consider
a return to the caves an option, thank you...
BW>what is dresden

Dresden is a German city that was firebombed during WWII. It was one of the
first real firestorms that we managed to create. IIRC, more people died in the
bombings of Dresden than in either of the two atomic weapons releases in Japan.

Some time ago I dropped in a message re: NOWHERE MAN.
My replies to date: exactly ZERO!
^^^^
Hmm, I remember this was the same response when I left a message about
X-Files a couple of years ago after seeing the first two episodes.
I wonder if there are even seven of us watching NOWHERE MAN???
Oh well, maybe one of these days someone might show an interest...
Cheers,
-Rob

Something HAS GONE WRONG when the concept of virtual sex rears its
head (no pun intended)... Seems to me that virtual sex is a
non-starter...sort of like virtual chocolate!
I don't think so!
Interacting with people face-to-face has got to be better than
EXCLUSIVELY meeting people on the Internet or the Fido Net.
Virtual sex - does it lead to virtual families...?
An interesting concept but, I think, distasteful in the extreme...

Jonathan Frakes (Riker) seemed the MOST disappointed when STTNG was
cancelled.
Has anyone seen much of him at all? I think I've seen him in
1. Deep Space Nine once
2. Hosting the Alien Autopsy Special
3. Once on Cybil Shepard's series (she turned down his offer for a
"date")
------------------------------------------------------------------
He always struck me as an actor who took on his role in STTNG
with great earnest and a zest for life. Has anyone seen or heard
anything else about Frakes?

I am another fan of X-Files and we appear to be in the same city.
Did you catch the "Christmas" epsiode of X-Files?
BTW: I have a number of nifty X-Files links on my Web Page.

-> some of it took.
Well, I guess the "early indoctrination" line would have some falming in
protest but I get your drift. Never open a religion thread without
being aware it can result in many different rejoinders.
Scully's last line in the episode about God talking to humans but no one
listening seems to be an on-going thread in the post-modern world.
Spirituality always seems to come back as a topic because people seem to
have trouble just ignoring it or sluffing it off as mythology and
indoctrination.
At any rate the episode was well-executed and did show the comp[lexities
in Scully and Mulder have no real boundaries.
Thanks for the reply. I was momentarily wondering if people here at
SFFAN were either disinterested in X-Files or moving on to other
interest areas. My but the NUCLEAR ENERGY THREAD has been busy, hasn't
it???
All my best,
