Wrong. The Defiant was an experimental design intended to fight the
Borg. The prototype of that design, the Defiant itself, had some
problems, and got mothballed when the problems became apparent and the
immediate threat of the Borg had evaporated, anyway.
Then when Sisko demanded a ship on-station because of the threat of the
Dominion, Starfleet, still short of ships due to the losses at Wolf 359,
pulled the Defiant out of mothballs and gave him that.

There are other differences, as well.
The White Star was specifically built and handed to Sheridan because
it was the cutting edge of Minbari/Vorlon technology. The Defiant
wound up in Sisko's hands because the Federation considered it a
FAILURE. "Overgunned and overpowered..." (If not *the* stupidest
words ever spoken in Star Trek, they're in the top ten. It was
designed to be a warship--massive firepower and the powerplant to fire
them all *and* run at top speed is the IDEAL.)

Perhaps part of the problem is that a large part of the numbers for
some successful films is repeat viewings by hard-core fans. For
instance, I saw STAR WARS eleven times over the course of its initial
release back in '77. And I was hardly unique. Most of the SF fans I
knew at the time (and have talked to since) did likewise. (And, of
course, I watched it many times since on video, too.)
Television SF series may have hard-core followings, too--but they
can't watch the episodes over and over and over. Well, they can--but
those repeat viewings don't get counted by the ratings folks. And the
intensity of feeling by the fans means little or nothing to the bean
counters.
I suspect, also, that we're suffering from "Media Bias Syndrome" here.
If you analyzed the failure rates for other genres--westerns, cop
shows, lawyer shows, doctor shows, sitcoms, etc.--I think you'd find
that the vast majority of *those* (good, bad and indifferent) get the
axe just as reliably as most SF series.

Not particularly. _I_ wasn't pleased with the changes in RP. I applauded the
decision to place it on Beta Aries instead of Mars, but that's about all. I
didn't like the complete disapperance of the independance plot. I really hated
Willis as the mighty morphin power puppy or whatever the hell he was supposed to
be. The pollution caused by evil aliens bit really pissed me off. The only part
I really cared for in the third episode is the last little bit with Willis as a
grownup. Where did those stupid hunter robots and sand beasts come from?

Except of course that everyone eventually reaches the level where they
wander off in a haze of cosmic awareness, or just wuffle themselves to
death.
There are some considerations though:
1. It is apparent that after a certain point (for the purposes of
this series) all species begin to level off their technological advance
as they lose "youthful vigor"
2. The Shadows make sure to make allies and do what they can to
infiltrate all potential enemies before making their moves.
3. The Shadows have repeatedly been overwhelmed and respond by
hiding until the victors go away. Then they try again. Space is big.
Real big. You can lose your carkeys, or yourself in it, particularly if
you know how to hibernate.
4. Truly advanced cultures lose their enthusiasm for dirty work such
as Shadow-wacking.
5. The Shadows are a metaphysical threat more than a technological
one. They don't invent so much as absorb, adapt and corrupt.

Another victim of poor programming. Putting *any* new show up
against popular, well-liked shows like Mad About You is suicide.
At least that's how the network treated that show here. After
failing on Sunday it move at least 4 or 5 times. Too bad, I liked
what I saw but, working nights I can only tape one show at a time
and that one lost.
