But the Defiant was designed as a *warship* -- nothing more and
nothing less. If they had decided they didn't need single-purpose
warships after the Borg were defeated, I could accept that. But
that's not what they said. They said that the Defiant was
"overpowered and overgunned" and thus flawed. Which is silly.

A vessel with more firepower than other ships many times its size, and
with sufficient power to run at warp speed *and* run the shields *and*
fire all those weapons is what you WANT in a warship.

TS> Defiant was so single-mindedly designed that they ignored things like

Defiant is unsuitable for long-term deep-space exploration--but then,
that's not what it was designed for. It is admirably suited for its
intended mission: heavy combat.

I've read and enjoyed his original five-volume WELL OF SOULS

However, I lost interest eventually when it became clear that
everything he's ever written--to the best of my knowledge--revolves
around physical transformation, mind-switching or some other means of
putting the characters into another form.
He's hardly the only writer with a recurring theme in his works,
but this one simply doesn't grab me the way certain others do.

There's this device called a "governor", which allows you to set a
maximum limit on how a vehicle can go, or how much power the engine
generates. (And, in an emergency, when you may *die* if you don't
move really quick, well, you release the governor and go hellbent for

A tiny bit of continuity (and a rationalization for why all Fed

No, the real reason is an inability (or unwillingness) to alter the
series in any meaningful way. Lois knows his secret. She is in
danger almost constantly. Aside from going through a ceremony and
wearing rings, what difference would their being married make? Almost
none (except that the characters would be happy--and we can't have
that). The only difference is that the "sexual tension" would vanish
because they can (legally) slake their passions.
But happily coupled couples are anathema on television. Therefore,
they will never truly get married.

I don't recall I'm afraid. Nicolai was channel surfing and stopped on a channel
that had two people outdoors talking under an improbably bright moon. That in
itself reminded me of the story; shortly thereafter the dialogue removed all
doubt. So we watched the rest of it.

Yes. It's called ablative (sp) armor. Basically the Defiant is coated
with a substance that absorbs the energy from weapons discharges and burns away
slowly. This gives them the ability (as demonstrated in the episode 'Way of the
Warrior') to stand up in combat unshielded against other foes.
Apparently Sisko has been making many changes to the Defiant without
necessarily telling Star Fleet. In the episode 'Paradise Lost' an Excellsior
class Federation Starship engaged the Defiant and the other captain was
surprised that the Defiant had that armor. Apparently Sisko hadn't informed Star
Fleet of the changes to the Defiant's specs. The man's definitely showing signs
of paranoia when he doesn't even trust his own leaders. :)
