DJ> Of course there's no particular reason to think that the Mimbarii
DJ> haven't advanced significantly, although they are obviously a more
DJ> conservative species than humanity.
I would think, if their starting point was the capability of interstellar
warfare, a thousand years advancement would result in technology beyond
our comprehension.
->> I can't imagine the Jedi keeping the peace in any Galatic political

DJ> I doubt they did, if you mean preventing all warfare for that time
DJ> frame. But the Jedi certainly would have tried to keep peaces and could
DJ> reasonably have survived for that long, and maintained the Republic
DJ> throughout.
Thirty thousand years of a single form of government and a single
enforcement system, would require a society in total stagnation, IMO.
->> I believe a thousand years from now even the human race will have
->> advanced to technology that will literally be magic to us. Just the
->> rate of change we experience now should give that result, and the

DJ> I often suspect that rather than increasing, it is leveling out. After
DJ> all, in the last thirty years, I haven't noticed anything more than
DJ> trivial improvements apart from the field of cybernetics...at least in
DJ> day-to-day living. As Calvin noted, we're almost in the 21st century.
DJ> Where are the jet-packs, et cetera?
The jet-packs do exist, but turned out not to be worth the trouble. We
have the capability of building monorails, moving sidewalks, skyways, etc.
The real impediment is not the technology, it's the politics. Any one of
those would require a government commitment, no private enterprise would
really profit without government support. About the single best thing we
could do to advance the art of transportation would be to abolish toll
roads, and we can't even get them to take the tolls off the Turnpike here
in Ohio. It was supposed to have been done a couple years ago. We have the
technology to build high speed rail links, but it's all been nothing but
talk for years. Too many people think since it won't directly benefit them
it shouldn't be done at all. We don't lack the technology, we lack the
will to use it.
There has been an awful lot of change, but much of it is invisible. From
automation in factories to computers in cars, it's there, but you can't
see it. Try one thing, look at the next pop or beer can you get hold of.
Notice it only has a seem for the lid? Twenty years ago it had top, bottom
and side seams. A major change, but nobody ever notices.
Of course one major reason we don't notice very many changes is that few
changes are intended to improve your quality of life, most are to cut
costs. If a factory is automated we don't wind up working 4 hours a week,
like George Jetson, but still work 40, just do the work of four people in
that time. We have much better air travel capability, but we don't fly in
luxury, just cheaper.
The maximum standard of living hasn't really increased that much, but the
median has moved up drastically. It is said we have the richest poor
people in the history of the world. OTOH, the bottom is still there. And
some people are still at the bottom.
Much of the improvement has also been in the enviornment. The air and
water are much cleaner, but we don't see that in our pockets. None of that
would have occurred without government regualtion, but it doesn't show up
under the minimum wage.
Other than medicine and computers I'm not sure I see a whole lot of
improvement from the '50s. We do have more, but much of it was available
in the 50's, just not to us. Then again, I beleive the ancient Roman
Empire could have constructed a digital computer using mechanical devices.
They just didn't know how to put it together. I often wonder what we are
capable of, if only we knew how to put together our existing technology.

LR>> I notivce that starfleet must have solved the dominions ability to shoot

KM> Yes. It's called ablative (sp) armor. Basically the Defiant is
KM> coated with a substance that absorbs the energy from weapons
KM> discharges and burns away slowly. This gives them the ability
KM> (as demonstrated in the episode 'Way of the Warrior') to stand
KM> up in combat unshielded against other foes. Apparently Sisko
KM> has been making many changes to the Defiant without necessarily

I had more of the impression that the ablative armor was installed under
Starfleet auspices, but nobody bothered to tell the captain of the
opposing starship. Which seems typical for any bureaucracy, govenment or
industry, throughout all of human history. As far as I can determine.
Ablative armor would add to the ships mass, requiring extra power to drive
and manuver. Fortunately it just so happens that the Defiant has some
extra power they weren't using.

Thanx for the huge list of SF channel programs. Nice if you, really.
I looked into primestar and found out I could not get my local programs on it,
anbd would need a regular antenna. Our local reception sucks, so unless a satsys
offered local progs too it's not much of an opt.

Agreed. It appears the only correspondence cable companies will
address is spam. At least that's what it took here, constant
spamming to their [Summit Cable] internet address. I am not going
to say try it but, if anybody should take it upon themselves to
do so, it may work.
