I thought it was quite well done, and quite faithful to the

WY>Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't the bug war humankind's first
WY>contact with extraterrestials (the bugs and the skinnies)?

That wasn't entirely clear in Heinlein's writing but clearly the
Federation valued military preparedness against extraterrestrials
regardless of theoritical possibilities against any life anywhere else
in the galaxy. *Troopers* Terran Federation appearently believed their
theoritical scientific model about human life predicted sentient life
everywhere will potentially be equally vigorous and expansionist

Since 1959, Heinlein progressively moved off from that notion in
*Troopers* because he realized such vigorousness of life would have
already brought aliens to us by now.

WY>If that's changed in a movie to explain the genesis of the Federation, that
WY>would undercut the main thrust of the story. Which seemed to me to be more
WY>about 1) Jonnie's personal growth (common theame for all kinds of genres)
WY>and 2) an examination of a better human society of the future while poking at
WY>contemporary sillyness (none of which has changed since 1959. Except for the
WY>date of the war, this could have been about today). . . .

Your position about changing the premise of the movie is possible
but complex. How you make the better human society sound better without
entangling oneself in 1996 US politics/political correctness criticism
is a challenge that might evade nearly everyone making the movie.

RAH was his own script doctor and kvetched about the frequent
results of those who took those few scripts from him in *Grumbles From
The Grave*. RAH eventually adopted the legendary position of SF writers
their novels will be handled for cinematic productions only by serious,
knowledgeable script writers and left as intact as possible.

Keeping RAH's kvetching in mind, Virginia Heinlein (yes, Wes, he was
married and you *can* detect when RAH's absteience to prevent fatherhood
in a nuclear war age ceased being in effect) might unexpectedly ditch
the movie if "Ginny" feels no faith in a script doctor even *comes near*
the computer word processor script of *Troopers*

On Tue May 14, Bill Warren said to Brion Lienhart:

-BW>Well, maybe, but that hardly means the movie will automatically be
-BW>bad. I do not consider faithfulness to be a particularly important
-BW>aspect in adapting a novel to the movies. Heinlein's novel is

Then they should have just made a movie about guys in armour blowing stuff up,
and not tried to pretend that it had any relation to the book. The average movie
goer probably doesn't even know who Heinlein is, and the Heinlein fans are going
to be pissed off about it.

Thanks for the info, but I would like to buy it in Antwerp, where I live.
Even more, do you know if it has already been translated into Dutch? The
prequels have been published by "Het Spectrum", Utrecht and if it has, my wife
can read it too.

I thought you would know I live in Belgium from my point number and my e-mail

Thanks again for your reply.

The idea of the Daleks trying the master for his crimes was a violation of
the entire premise of the Daleks. The idea of the Daleks granting the
Master's last request to have the Doctor transport his remains to Galafrey
 is even worse.

The Daleks do not try anyone. They destroy anyone whom they consider an
impediment, not because the other is a criminal but because the Daleks are
 Daleks.

If the Daleks ever got the chance they would destroy the Doctor without a
 second thought.

The Doctor is not half human.

The Doctor does not have romantic relationships with human women.

These were added as easy ways to open some doors to an American audience.
They are betrayals of the series and it's fans.

The TARDIS does not have an "Eye of Harmony" that will open for a human and
suck in the Earth. If they want to invent one they could do a better job of
 it.

The Doctor cannot bring people back to life by going back before they died.
That is well established. When they die they stay dead.

All in all I am disappointed. Even the theme seems butchered.

The scenes with the Master taking over the ambulance driver's body had me
saying, "They made a damned horror movie out of it."

Well, it wasn't all horror, but it was bad enough.

Even the device that supposedly gave the Master the Doctor's remaining lives
was as cheesy as anything from the series.
