I haven't consulted the tech manuals on this one, but I can envision the
Enterprise having a low-powered scanner array on each deck, capable of scanning
that deck for debris and using a small transporter to beam the unwanted
material to the recycling tanks.

Scanner would have to be able to detect a life form, though...maybe it would
need a tricorder to help it or it MIGHT beam away the poor kitty...

ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
.TID: GE/32 1.2
I just got off the net with the newest info/press release/thingie on the B5
RPG, called: The Babylon Project. Here is what I found, hopefully it will
be usefull to some people here:

OVERVIEW OF THE GAME

Yes! The rumor are true! On March 4th, Chameleon Eclectic Entertainment,
Inc., in association with WireFrame Productions, Inc., Babylonian Productions,
and Warner Bros. Worldwide Publishing, announced the upcoming release of
The Babylon Project, a roleplaying game based on the groundbreaking Warner
Bros. science fiction television program Babylon 5.

The Babylon Project will be released this fall. We'll post a specific date
here when we confirm it (probably in late April or May)--the release will
likely be towards the end of September or in October. The first supplement
(the Earthforce Sourcebook) will be released at the same time as the main game
book, and will be quickly followed by two additional books by the end of the
year. A full line of sourcebooks and supporting products are planned to
follow--as any fan knows, the Babylon 5 universe is intricate, cohesive, and
richly detailed, and will make an intriguing backdrop for an exciting
roleplaying game.

As for that background, The Babylon Project will be set against the period
just prior to and concurrent with the first season or so of the television
show: the tense period following the Earth-Minbari war and leading to
emergence of the Shadows and the Narn-Centauri war. At this time, we can't
comment beyond that on what "secret," "non-official," etc. material we'll be
using or creating. Rest assured, however, that project head Joseph Cochran
will be working closely with Babylon 5 creator and Executive Producter
J. Michael Straczynski and Warner Bros. to ensure that our material is
authentic, consistent with the hsow and its story, and interesting to both the
gamer and the Babylon 5 fan in all of us.

We can't offer too many details on the game syster at this point, either.
We can say that it is a new system, and though it owes some philosophical
and design elements to both the published (Mellennium's End and Psychosis)
and unpublished systems we've developed here at Chameleon Eclectic (not to
mention co-publisher WireFrame Productions' design experience), it is being
purpose-built for the Babylon 5 universe. It is not directly compatible with
Mellennium's End or any existing system, though players who have enjoyed our
games will appreciate this one as well. WireFrame is heading up the design
of the game--but we here at Chameleon Eclectic are closely involved, and
wouldn't put our name on the project if we weren't confident that this was
shaping up to be a great game and not just a knock-off of a great background.

CONTRIBUTING TO THE BABYLON PROJECT

Many people have emailed us with proposals for contributing to the writing,
art, or playtesting of the game. We haven't yet decided when, how, or for
what specific books we'll be needing freelancers, and we won't be soliciting
freelance work before mid-Spring, at the earliest. When we do start looking
at freelance work, we will be working from a very rigid production schedule
(sing the release schedule must be approved well in advance by Warner Bros.),
so it's no good pitching product proposals to us. If you're still itching
to get something to us, get a copy of our Writers' Guidelines and send us some
samples of your work.

The above is all pretty equally true for artists--we don't yet know how much
freelance art we'll be requiring, or when. If you'd like us to consider your
art, send us some samples--but don't expect an answer before mid-Spring.

As for playtesting, well, we've pretty much got that covered. As you can
imagine, there are no shortage of volunteers. Please don't send us a request
to help with playtesting unless you've got some pretty impressive credits
under your belt--even then, the odds that we'll need additional help are
pretty slim.

HOW WE GOT TO THIS POINT

We're co-publishing The Babylon Project with WireFrame Productions, Inc.
WireFrame has been awarded the roleplaying game license for The Babylon
Project by Warner Bros. Worldwide Publishing. WireFrame will be primarily
responsible for the game design (although we will, of course, be working
closely with them on this), Chameleon Eclectic will handle pre-production,
editing and production, as well as promotions and sales.

As many people have brought up, there were many game companies looking for
this license--we know for certain of four companies that tried to get it and
failed, including one well-known company with a long history of licensed game
products (we've also heard from several individuals who said they had pursued
it, or were planning to). How did we succeed? Persistance, luck, and an
excellent proposal (in more or less that order) on the part of WireFrame
president Joseph Cochran. If there were some other magic ingredient, we don't
know what it was either. However, we're very pleaed and proud to be working
with this great imaginary world--and we know we'll do it right.

I was in subs for 6 yrs, they're probably the closest things we have to
spaceships today. Never saw any rats, or cockroaches. Flies would come down the
hatches when we were in port, but when we went out and closed up, they would die
off in a couple of days since we didn't leave any food or garbage out that they
could breed in. Occasionally we would get an outbreak of body lice in one of the
berthing areas, but when we found out who had them, they were fairly easy to
take care of.
However, if civilians operated a lot of submarines, I'm sure they would have
cockroaches at least.

It's a hardcover; publisher is Knopf; price probably around $25 (available in
England for UK#17.50; best bet in Holland would be the American Bookshop in
Amsterdam or Den Haag).

One thing that can lose an audience (book, movie or TV) is if you over-explain
things. That was addressed in TOS, and was carried over into TNG, going by the
fact that they only explained things essential (?) to the plot.

Likewise on spaceships (so far, anyway), no rodent has gotten into spcat that
wasn't intended as an experimental subject, but I think an occasional fly
manages to get into the space shuttle....
