BC> In Florida today adult adolescence and unacceptable workmanship
BC> are not considered valid reasons to terminate an employee. An
BC> individual thus terminated will simply march down to the Florida
BC> Department of Labor and Employment Security and file for
BC> unemployment compensation. He'll get it too, 26 weeks of half
BC> pay vacation with mandatory, of course, but cursory job
BC> interviews. At this time the employers "experience rating" will
BC> go up, as will his premium for mandatory state unemployment
BC> insurance. The state of Florida grants it's residents the
BC> right, not privilege, of gainful employment. Well paid Florida
BC> residents can, if "wrongly" terminated, cause a steep upturn in
BC> an employers unemployment insurance premium.

BK> Having given this some thought I have come to the conclusion that
BK> this portion should also be challenged. I would like to explain
BK> exactly why there is nothing at all unreasonable in that situation,
BK> but I would prefer to do it in an echo where it would be on-topic.
BK> If you don't get the debate echo, is there another you would choose?

The 1996 guidelines for terminating all employees are the same
guidelines used in 1976 for the termination of _MINORS_. This is
progress? I noted the fact that privileges are continually being
legislated into rights. There is however no corresponding
legislation of responsibilities to balance the aforementioned
rights.

In Florida an employees responsibilities are:

Not to be caught stealing from his employer.

Nor to be insubordinate to his employer, or to his employer's
agents or assigns, before another employee or a customer of
  said employer.

No mention is made of earning one's pay by doing the job that one
was hired to do. I may be a bit old fashioned but, _THAT'S_A_
CROCK_. Individuals that do not work acceptably by the standards
of their employer, should not be allowed to continue working, nor
should they be paid for the time that they put in.

The subject of this thread is EDUCATION THROUGH FICTION. My
premise in starting this thread was that:

Science Fiction has historically had a higher percentage of
educational content than any other form of fiction and that in
recent years this content has been dropping.

The debate echo is not available locally nor am I particularly
interested in debate. I will continue this thread as long as
there are responses, or such time as it is shut down by the
Moderator. I will note that to date Nicolai has not commented.

FG> I won't even touch this arguement, being only an occasional Highlander

How exactly are you defining "S-Ffy" if you regard a book about people
who are immortal due to a genetic quirk as "not truly S-Ffy" until it
reaches the present day?

Are you saying that "historical novel" covers it for the earlier
portions?

If so, I can't agree with that. Without its sfnal premise, none of the
story in BOAT OF A MILLION YEARS can happen.

More so than you'd think; Forbidden Planet has been in constant video
release for twenty years, and Criterion released a restored laserdisc
version a few years ago. The thing that grumps me is that they're
redoing a classic, and there's no need for it. There are stories enough
in sf that have never been touched; why are they doing this?

Ah (always distrust people who go"Ah") but if you expect that, it'll happen.
You'll always let your feelings show through, so this lady will notice you
don't actually expect her to respond to you. And will interpret that as you
not actually wanting her to.
There might be a certain "fear-of-failure" playing behind this, which might
account for little things in your behaviour which give that message to the
lady. Are you trying to hard to be a friend, at the cost of trying to
start a relationship? A good test is, seeing if you make excuses against
actions which could deepen her involvement with you.

Well, that's enough. Please don't send me hate-mail for this ;-) just

I must disagree most violently . "Get a life" must have
been the pinnacle of comedy acting... I mean, the intro alone was hilarious!
Of course, I'm biased, I had a teacher at the time who looked *exactly* like
the main character, and oh what fun we had...

Ever seen "Red Dwarf" by the way? It's an English SF/comedy. And it's
brilliant, based loosely on the book. Check out BBC2 sometime in the autumn,
I think it should be back on by then. Damn fool actor got accused of rape
and held up the new episodes, so it's been a while since it was on.
