That's probably all there is, although associations can spring in the
most unlikely cases from the oddest similarities.

For example, the last new episode of B5 had the "Black Rose killer". I
didn't think anything special of it; until after that I saw some
episodes of Ranma 1/2 with a character self-nicknamed "The Black Rose".
But aside from that, no real similarity. ('course, for all I know, a
black rose is a old story element, not that I'd ever run into it before)

Another anime I ran into had living starships... but again, not even
similiar in detail.

MH>Straczynski is an excellent example of that. Joe started out writing

You point out one glaring difference between US and British TV, that
some foundational degree of culture was present when their networks

MH>He's got maybe a GED with a year or two of trade school. And this guy

Any civillized 21st Century culture cannot exist with such poorly
bred citizen of this level of ethical values and literacy in the
sciences as portrayed by the composite man just presented here.

For one thing, in democracies such a man must be currently literate
in the sciences to effectively vote intelligently on scientific issues.

*This* kind of a vacuum brained man would vote in a tyrrany!

   You're suggesting--impuigning!--that civlilized intelligent life
isn't preponderant in our country because popular media has cultivated
empty-minded life to prevent any critical thinking about nonrenewanble
consumer products to protect easy profit margins.

Why does my guts suspect a educated and ethical population might not
buy so much nonrenewable consumables or docilely accept this level of
mediocracy in entertainment?

What is your thinking about any good SF finding a place in mass
market media with the declining educational sharpness that you've just
highlighted? To say nothing of the survival of a educatuionally literate
television system in the US?

That's not necessarily the case. If you're unable or unwilling to

chances are you'll never get your hands on [insert starlet of your

simply coopted by fiat, because this shocking betrayal adds to the

The way his wife turned on him in the pilot was one of the reasons I
lost interest in the show. That kind of 180 degree turn in her
behavior needed some heavy-duty justification. And there was *none*.
If she was a ringer all along, why didn't they just have her *steal*
the negatives, or at least find out where he kept them (so experts
could blow the safe, for instance).

If she really *did* love him so much, why did she turn on him so
completely? And why isn't she a major star if she can be such a
convincing actress--pretending so consistently to love him (if she
didn't) or not to know him (if she's trying to protect him).

Do you know of any reputable medical authority which actually
considers cancer a mutation--rather than a disease? I don't.
Certainly cancers can be one of the results of exposure to
dangerous levels of radiation.  That doesn't make it a mutation;
mutations don't occur in a single organism anyhow (comic book mutants
aside). From what I know of them, cancers seem more and more to the
be result of an interaction between environmental factors and
genetics. Like many other diseases, you may be more or less likely to
develop a cancer based on your genetic heritage--but environmental
(and possibly behavior) influences can influence whether it actually
occurs.
And I believe cancers have been around for a very long time. But
no doubt the vast majority of cancers throughout history went
undiagnosed. Or misdiagnosed.
