Good Ole Riker.....

FS> Ummm, I think you mean Lois & Clark. I've seen every DG episode so

Hmmm, maybe that was it. I guess I just might be so used to seeing them
together...well, you know, association and all that... Considering who
created DG it certainly wouldn't surprise me at all to see him there.
I wonder if ol' Leonard Nimoy will do a guest spot on the show....

Well here it is Monday morning and I'm home again after a
weekend of fun and adventure. The show was nice in it's own way
but it wasn't a con by any stretch. I took Disk Doctor's old NEC
pc-8500 with the 300 baud built in modem with me and filled it's
32k of onboard memory with message traffic up fairly quickly ...
now all I have to do is figure out how to get it off that machine
and onto the boards. I was able to get a connect at reunion
with it but nothing made sense on the screen I will have to try
to figure out what internal config to set up to make the
connections properly to upload the text files.

Babs and crew arrived on Friday evening and were installed at the
Holiday Inn by 6pm. Getting ready for the con was the order of
the day/evening. More on this later from the NEC messages.

We arrived at the Hyatt at 10am on Saturday Morning (an hour
early to check out the lay of the land and see if we could
register (we had reserved seating). No Such Luck... There were
3 to 4 hundred people already in line when we arrived with no
one making any attempt to handle the crowd other than to get
them into a line and await the opening bell.

We grabbed a quick bite to eat and returned at 11am to find 2
ticket sellers trying to handle the crowd that filled most of
the 3rd floor of the Hyatt's meeting area. There was also a
Model Search event, Financial event and Religious event all
booked into the meeting rooms on the 3rd floor but between 10am
and about 1pm there were lines backed up for the Visions event.
After 1pm the influx settled into a constant trickle for the
rest of the day.

Brent Spiner was a no-show due to some "illness" the lady that
plays Dax on DS9 took his place. This was announced frequently
to the crowd awaiting entry and I do not know how many people
decided that they had been had and left but over all the event
seemed to be well attended.

Of the local Fan Community I saw members of Space Ship Earth,
The Porno-Partol, Krew Of The Enterprise, and the Klingon Assult
Group present. The Vice-Chair of NOSF3, a large group from The
C-C-C crowd, and a couple of people from The Coast-con were
noted in the mass of humanity. Number Six made the trek down
from Baton Rouge and seemed to have enjoyed the fray. When asked
at the "ticket" area as to how sales were going I heard that
over a thousand people had come through the doors on Saturday
prior to the main talk being delivered by "Dax" at 5:30 pm.

The schedule was shot from the opening bell with everything
running an hour later than the posted times in the program and
the event closing about 90 min later than the posted time on
Saturday. Over all there were a lot of minor problems with
event that could have been avoided (the largest example was the
mess that was chronic at the door trying to process the people
that attended the event) but over-all it ran smoothly and most
of the people attending seemed to have enjoyed themselves.

The high point of the event for me was finding Johnny Crawford
(of the Micky Mouse Club and Rifle-Man) sitting at a table
signing photos. This was unexpected and a delight to have had a
couple of short visits with him. He was much older that I
expected (having not been seen in MANY years). Mark Goddard (60
now) was interesting as was David Prowse (Watch for his upcoming
TALK-SHOW) and of course there was "DAX"... .

The high point was seeing and talking to old friends and
smoozing with the fen. Over-all a B effort that could have been
a class A event if a bit more planning and effort had been made
by the PROFESSIONAL STAFF.

Why stop at blocks that are only six feet on a side? If you could do it, why
not make 'em twenty feet on a side. That way there's no possibility of anyone
moving 'em once they're set in place (especially if you bolt 'em together and
then cover the lot with concrete). Hmmm...our own form of the pyramids, with a
curse that really would work on grave robbers dumb enough to try and loot
radioactive waste facilities...

Corporations? Hmm...seems to me that there's no such thing, really, as a
corporation. There are people who have, for one reason or another, banded
together. But if there are people working a site, and Greenpeace
"commando-types" should FOR WHATEVER REASON attack that site, it will be people
who will get hurt, not some anonymous, faceless "corporation".

BW>As for their methods, in a weird way I

I tend to support most of what Greenpeace does, but placing trees and plants in
the "beautiful entity" category, to be protected AT THE EXPENSE OF HUMAN LIFE
goes just a wee bit too far for me. Once you step over the line, you are
associated in my mind with eco-terrorists. And when you start to shoot up
people to protect plants, be prepared to be regarded as a terrorist, with all
that that implies.

BW> wind, solar, geothermal, and hydroelectric, like niagra falls. I don't

Then go back to living in the caves. Fossil fuel is dangerous, hydroelectric
and geothermal is inadequate (and carry their own dangers), and solar has more
drawbacks than can be gone in to here (unless/until we set up SPSSs, at which
point we get in to the problems of broadcast power...)

 BW>I am pretty
BW> sure there has got to be a way to make electric power in which
 BW>we are so

If you can come up with one, by all means do. There are lots of people who'd
love to see some such a method implemented. But it must be economically
practical (you must get more out of the system than you put in in effort
building it). Cheap safe power supply? If you can develop one, you can make
billions...
