Well, if they wrote the script for it, Zim could have a pretty big part.
Actually, the only "starring" role would be Rico, if they kept really close to
the book. But if they kept totally faithful to the book, it wouldn't make all
that great a movie (IMNSHO).

In Starship Troopers, women weren't barred from serving (they appear to have
made up the majority of the Navy's pilots, for one thing, IIRC). They just
weren't ground pounders, by and large.

Agreed, though someone else was playing Newt and Hicks there.

Word is the next Aliens movie involves a clone of Ripley. Shouldbe
interesting to see how credibly they can do this. (Although I'd rather deal with
it the way some say ST:5 and the last season of Beauty and the Beast be dealt
with. Have opening scene with Ripley/Kirk/Vincent awaken wide-eyed saying; "Wow,
what a dream...!")

I'm reminded of a DC comics story on the end of the original 5 year mission.
Captian Will Decker comes aboard, wearing the gray uniform we see later in
ST:TMP, and Uhura asks if this is to be new Starfleet issue. Decker replies that
they're considering it.....

Uhura: "Well, if you're taking a poll sir, count one yes vote from me."

Decker: "Thank you, Lieutenant, I'll keep it in mind."

After he leaves the bridge, Scotty says (as nearly as I can remember all
this);

"What's thot yer sayin' Uhura? I for one, don't fancy flyin' around the
universe in a pair of pajamas!"

Uhura (slightly cold): "You might feel differently, Scotty, if you just
spent the last five years wearing a *miniskirt!*"

Scotty (caught off guard): "Uhh....aye. There is that...."

BC> It will be interesting to see what Hollywood does with this

I wonder how well `The Forever War' would survive such a film translation?
Haldeman already had most of the `PC' elements in place, including women in the
Infantry. *Properly* handeled, it could come off as well as the Marines in
`Aliens,' I would think.

Except homosexuality as the normal state of the world will stick in the
throats of some people....

I suppose ( admittedly oversymplyfing here ) conservatives might like
Starship Troopers, and dislike The Forever War....

I was born in Sebring Florida which is in the rural south. I
still live in the community of my birth and note the alarming
changes that have taken place in it since my childhood.

In the Sebring of my youth the ratio of firearms to people was
about one to four. That, by the way, was the average annual
ratio. In the summer when the tourists had returned to the north
the ratio was closer to one to two. Yet death by gunshot was
virtually unknown in our small community.

Sebring in the 1950's and 1960's was a small community with an
agricultural/tourism based economy. The tourism was of the fixed
residential variety; old folks who came south, lived in their
own homes all winter, and then went back north. This economy
provided few, if any, jobs for young men. Of course in the mid
to late 1960's most of our young men were scrambling for student
deferments to avoid Vietnam.

The permanent male population of Sebring was made up largely of
tradesmen and agricultural workers of the cattle and citrus
industries. Of these men most were family men and a large
percentage were hunters. The children of these hunters were
disciplined; touch one of Daddy's guns and eat, for that matter
sleep, standing up for a week; and educated about firearms. As a
matter of fact most of the boys in those households participated
in hunting and everyone ate the product thereof.

As I see it the current problems with shootings and violence
that we as a society are experiencing stem from three issues:

  1. Explosive population growth
  2. Diminished parental ability to discipline children
  3. Misinformation about firearms and killing

I will illustrate with a news item posted April 11, 1994 on the
NEWSLINK BBS by the News Director of WWOJ/WWTK RADIO; a quote
from "A whuppin' can help more than it hurts" Commentary The
Tampa Tribune-Times, Sunday, March 10, 1996 by Joseph H. Brown,
a Tribune editorial writer; and a quote from David Drake in "THE

Government efforts to protect children's rights have already
weakened parents' ability to discipline their children. Some kids
warn their parents constantly that any disciplinary measures will
result in a call the child-abuse authorities.

In all of the discussions by social workers and lawmakers on how
to combat our growing juvenile crime problem, the diminished
ability of parents to punish their children is never brought up
as one of its "root causes."
------------------ END JOSEPH H. BROWN QUOTE --------------------
------------------- BEGIN DAVID DRAKE QUOTE ---------------------
A lot of fictional violence has been cleaned up. When I was a
kid, I watched Davey Crockett shoot an Indian into a neat,
bloodless swan dive from a tree branch. Nowadays you can see a
lot of the equivalent thing on TV, folks using fully-automatic
weapons which do even less obvious injury than Davey's flintlock
had. In prose, the normal technique is for the victim to fall
over, out of the storyline, and permit the author to get on to
matters of greater interest.

And that's fine, no problem, we all do what we do.... But for my
part, I don't want kids joining the Marines--or politicians
voting to deploy those Marines--because at the back of their
minds they have the notion that real violence is clean and cute.

Violence is sometimes necessary? Maybe; I won't advocate
unilateral disarmament until I'm willing to disarm myself, which
at the I'm not. But the look and sound and _smell_ of the results
