MJ> My final suggestion is that Sam Becket (QUANTUM LEAP) leaps in to
MJ> change history so that Catherine does not, in fact, die as we saw in
MJ> the original series. This is my personal favorite approach. It
MJ> negates the entire third season *without* resorting to "Bobby steps
MJ> out of the shower"-style clumsiness. Yes, they're ignoring everything
MJ> they showed up during the third season--but for a reason. And that
MJ> reason is part of the story. [I personally enjoyed the third season,
MJ> but I'm in a small minority in that regard.]
How about if Sam jumps into Vincent and stops the killers in time, loads
them up on the helicopter and they have an unfortunate, well, accident;
then Vincent (Sam) finds a loophole in the caverns and is propelled back
to the lab to be with his lady love! Happily ever after for all!!!
I LOVE IT!!!!!

DJ> Interesting issue. Military service is required for the vote. If
DJ> women are barred from combat duty then either they don't have the vote,
DJ> or have the vote without having to take the risks that the other half
DJ> do.
Ah, but women DO serve in the military.. in the Navy...
I believe that it was stated that the women were better pilots and had higher
tolerances for G-stresses and all. Also, when Juan and Carl went to sign up,
Carmencita also went and was shown preferential treatment by the
recruiter..remember? Although they weren't LISTED in the MI, doesn't mean that
they weren't there.. besides, if you look at the society as a whole--
women had different roles than men... not neccesarily a discrimination thing,
just a different role..:)
The whole society set-up was a good idea, IMHO. Corporal punishment, public
floggings, your parents had to be punished for YOUR actions as well, not being
able to go into public service until you prove your ability to put the good of
the whole before the wants of the few..etc.. this is what should be happening
now.. just think, crime rate down, enconomics up, children actually LEARNING TO
THINK in school??!! Nah, just a dream world...:)
As for women having the vote but without the risks.. did you not think that the
bugs must've had some sort of space navy? They had to get to the planets
SOMEHOW... and how else would they have "plastered Buenos Aires"?
But Bill is correct in saying that most of H&MP will probably be excised...
in this "Politically Correct" day and age.. it would offend WAAYY too many
people for someone to be held accountable for their actions... go back and
reread LT. COL. Dubois' puppy-training thread and you'll see what I mean..
The whole book is a coming-of-age of Juan Rico in HIS society.. and that society
would piss off too many people in ours...
anyhoo-- sorry, had to throw my nickel in--do I get any change? :)

BL> Who says they are banned from combat duty? Nearly all of the spaceship
BL> pilots are female, as well as a very large portion of the navy crews.
BL>
True, RAH (speaking as Juan) stated that "Nevertheless--guard duty was a
privilege. It was a rest stand beside that door, arms folded, feet spread,
doping off and thinking about nothing... but always warmly aware that any moment
you might see a feminine creature even though you were not privileged to speak
to her other than on duty."
"...keeping him constantly reminded that the only good reason to fight is a
living, breathing reality?"
and: "In a mixed ship, the last thing a trooper hears before a drop (maybe the
last word he ever hears) is a woman's voice, wishing him luck. If you don't
think this is important, you've probably resigned from the human race.
So, women ARE allowed in the military...and just because they aren't in the MI,
doesn't mean that they don't fight...:)
Personally, I kinda LIKE the idea of hand-to-hand combat training when
practicing with a wonderful member of the opposite sex..:>

GN>HA. How about "ULTRAMAN!" A beauty of a show. The perfect example
GN>of wonton violence on a city. The only show where the hero destroys
GN>more than the villain!
GN> Origin:(1:163/430)
*Ultraman* certainly was very violent but found a following for a
few seasons. *Ultraman* never will win prizes for complex texture in its
scientific accuarcy values, and penultimately died a sudden death
because it tried to perperatrate a *Power Ranger* style plot episode
after episode on the basically adolescent and adult audience that
cuoldn't stomach that kind of show.
*Power Rangers* is perfect for a school age audience that is unable
to distinguish or identify a segment of recycled stock film footage for
it as recycled footage.
Does anybody remember a cartoon TV series where a undersea colony is
so far below the ocean the crew would need to depressurize for several
days to return to the surface? It aired on NBC sometime between 1970 and
1980 on Saturday mornings. Yes, it wasn't very imaginative or weird, it
was unusual in some respects because ordinary crises were part of the
drama of the show.
This came during a experimental cycle in Network cartoon TV where
the programmers avoided using villans or combat to introduce drama and
it lasted only one or two years. Believe it or not, this was prior to
Congressional threats to institute intense, constricting regulation of
children's TV
