It is. I highly reccoomend The Forever War. But I'm still not sure this is
the story originally asked for. The main character, William Mandela isn't so
much `transported' into the future, as the means of interstellar travel they use
are a bit like the wormholes of DS-9. You can make big jumps across interstellar
space with them, but you still have to cross a number of light years at
relativistic speeds (and the time dilation that comes with that) to reach them.
Suppose you knew there was a wormhole at Alpha Centauri that would take you to a
point 10,000 lightyears away? Cool, but you still have to reach Alpha Centauri
first, at barely sublight speed. Then the star you *want* to go to is another
(say) 15 lightyears beyond the other end.
You can find yourself signifigantly out of step with events on Earth, but not
as bad as if there were no wormhole at all.
That's how a man with the sexual orientation of most of us ends up on an
Earth where homosexuality and cloning are the norm. (But the war still goes
on...)
(He knows some of his crew refers to him as "the old queer," but none are so
indiscreet as to do it where it can be heard. And there's an interesting scene
when he gets drunk with one of his female senior officers....)

Basically agreed, though it would mean throwing out that female police

writers had in mind for her....

The only thing that destroys this line of reasoning is Worf's assignment to DS9.

To everyone saying there are "bugs" in Generations, you are all correct,
but come on, the ENTIRE movie is a "bug." From Data's chip to Kirk's
death, to whatever. The main thing is the Nexus. Why didn't Kirk and
Picard just leave it days earlier to save the Enterprise, the station,
everything. They don't seem to mind altering time so why not just go
back to before the Borg came and stop it from happening. Also, Soran
achieved what he set out to do, HE IS IN the Nexus, so he "won"
basically. If Picard and Kirk leave that doesn't mean that HE is not in
it. Also, the echos of people seem to know what is going on in the real
world so the Picard in there will know everything that the Picard out
there knows, and well, you know.

That is the only one of Octavia's novels that I have read, but I
thought it was fairly good. Perhaps a 7 on a 1-7 scale. I would of
given it a higher rating, but I thought that she tied it up to fast
and clean in the last few pages.
I'm not sure that it is SF. It is a little to close to being contemporary.
