I am looking for some info on Wayne Barlowe, a painter, illustrator, &
visionary who has painted several covers for SF/Fantasy novels & also published
two works of his own, Barlowe's Guide to Extraterrestrials, & Expedition, not
to mention a compilation of some of his work, called The Alien Life of Wayne
Barlowe. He also released a line of collectible figures called Powerlords, in
1982. Anyway, I rather admire his work & was wondering if anyone could suggest
a newsgroup or forum where I could get info on his other releases & discuss his
work with others of like mind. I would appreciate any nudges in the right
direction.

Recently, I was reminded by NICOLAI SHAPERO, our MODERATOR, that "sigs."
are not allowed in this echo. I, naturally, followed the reminder. If I
might, though, I'd like to take the liberty of posting a relatively short
message I received from a local member about "WHY" needless "sigs." must be
avoided. Willie Smith did an excellent job describing why our moderator
intervened to "correct" me. If this message helps others, I trust it is not
"off topic." I certainly appreciated the "clarification."
I DIDN'T KNOW THESE THINGS AND MANY OF YOU MIGHT BE IN THE SAME SITUATION.
Hello Robert
Perhaps I can shed a little light on these stringent rules. Fidonet is a
series of Local BBS's, the Sysop's of which PAY the long distance charges to
receive the echoes. IF every message contained a SIG of only 6 lines with the
fancy ASCII lines etc etc......Then THAT message size would be overlly large
for the content of the message. NOW if all messages have these SIGS then the
packets of mail which are distributed by individual long distance calls would
get very large indeed in relation to the ACTUAL amount of information contained
in the messages. This results in greater L/D charges to each system which
handles the packets due to an increased transfer time.
I call Toronto every night for a packet of Fido Mail. With 2 or 3 messages
that packet is only about 2500 bytes. However with each message every time
having a SIG attached that packt might get to only 3000 bytes BUT the bottom
line would be that MY L/D charges over a year would be increased.
SIGS were outlawed in the Original Fidonet rules when the system was set up
and it has never been a popular suggestion to change the OLD WAYS. Mainly
because of the costs.
The SYSOP is responsible rule is simply a way of safeguarding the integrity
of an echo. Each echo is LITERALLY OWNED by the Moderator. They have ABSOLUTE
power over what is discussed in that echo. Now some guy in Timbuktoo has NO
CONTROL over what you so so he holds the sysop of the system you post from as
responsible. This way too many posts agi\ainst the rules, the moderator cuts
off the system. Therefore he has the control.
That's the way Fidonet works. There has to be some form of control.
Willie Smith

LOL!
LED> Wonderous were the infrequent gems of science fiction dramas and

Very rare. Interestingly enough, today's kids have much neater toys,
while we had much better shows.

Actually, what she said was the the part of her in the Nexus was "an echo" and
