Hello Frank!

Sunday March 03 1996, Frank Glover writes to Marco Catalano:

 MC>> A probe
MC>> that small couldn't have warp capability.

FG> I don't know. The first apperance of Worf's girlfriend involved travel
FG> in a one-person warp-driven device of similar size, so there is a
 FG> precedent.

Ah yes, that was in the episode "The Emissary" if memory serves correctly.
That makes it not a YATI I guess.

MC>> Let alone that, when the probe started to dampen the sun, it
MC>> immidiately became darker. An 'M' class planet or moon must be
MC>> several light-minutes away at mimimun. Like our own planet, the
MC>> sunlight takes about 8 minutes to reach us.

FG> Absolutely right on this one, though. To be neither too close or to far
FG> to be a Class-M world, and the speed of light in vacuum being the
FG> unalterable (even if surpassable) thing it is, they should've seen no
FG> change for, say, 8-12 minutes....

Grin, I guess Paramount didn't wanted to waste precious celluoid, Frank!
I can understand why Paramaount didn't want to make the audiance wait for so
many minutes without anything happening.
They could however have thrown in several more minutes of fighting between
Picard and Soran.

Or would that be overkill?

Greetings from Marco

Possibly, but can humans adjust to the lower pressure? Just doing a bit of
quick-and-dirty (stipulated) math, .38 x 14.7 = 5.586 PSIA, or some such. It's
not even that thin atop the Andes, IIRC.

Anyone who lives there and adjusts will have to remain permanently; the
adjustments would be a bit radical, IMO.

That's the one. And one of the aliens was on earth for the Big
Event (i.e., our receiving the last of the probe's signals before it
was destroyed, after the signal had spent years getting back to
earth). The aliens, who had FTL travel and horrifically advanced
sciences, had sent someone to earth after they discovered the probe.
They thought our probe was a remarkable achievement (quaint, perhaps,
but a very clever design given our backwardness).
The alien tried to play up the triumph we'd achieved by getting the
probe there at all...but having him here as a constant reminder of how
crude our technology was compared to theirs really put a damper on
things.

You bet! I read everything she writes. She has a vivid
imagination and writes extremely well (even though her sense of life
is really depressing). I didn't care for the Xenogenesis series when
I initially read it--but I've grown to really like it since then.
Her most recent novel (as far as I know) is PARABLE OF THE SOWER,
though I suspect the next novel in that series is due fairly soon.

    That's not the point, I don't think.
As I see it, Picard is *still* in the Nexus. He never left.
The Nexus, basically, gives you what you want most. What Picard
wanted most was to save the Enterprise (and the world full of aliens).
So when he entered the Nexus, the Nexus *gave* him that. His version
of paradise is one in which HE, at least, has the moral strength to
turn his back on eternal bliss and struggle mightily--with the
greatest starship captain in history at his side!--to stop the villain
of the movie. So that's what he experienced.
   ...and is still experiencing.
Meanwhile, in the "real" world, the planet was destroyed, the
Enterprise and its crew were destroyed and everything we see in ST:TNG
from there on out is part of his fantasy....

I'm told that there's a fan-fiction version of this story floating
