re: JMS being influenced by things...
TR> Neither do I, but I do believe that it is possible that his
TR> own work has been inspired by someone else's work. It only
TR> makes sense, after all, and only a fool would ever suggest
TR> otherwise.
Take music for example. A friend of mine once proposed that was
impossible to be a musician in the US without having been influenced
in some way by Bach and Duke Ellington. Now I'm not going to
comment as to whether or not I believe this particular claim, but
the point is that no matter how close one gets to originality these
days, one is still standing on the shoulders of at least a few
giants. Go back to the Stone Age. Now there's some original
storytelling. (A series of grunts, translated into English. -- "Me
kill great horned thing." "Yeah, you big hero. Save tribe from
great horned thing.")
TR> I have to tell you of a conversation I had with Pat Cadigan
TR> once. I was telling her about a novel I was in the process of
TR> writing when suddenly she interrupted me and asked me if I'd
TR> read her novel Mindplayers. (I hadn't.) It turns out that my
TR> novel and hers had the same plot line, and even shared some
TR> details.
Parallel development can be a real bitch, eh...
I've often thought that I'd like to try and write something. The
thing that always stops me is my own lack of knowledge. I've always
felt that without being very well-read in the genre of interest, I'd
be too likely to engage in cliche and repetition. Part of trying to
approach originality is knowing a lot of what has gone before. You
might use aspects of what you've learned, but you also know what not
to use.

Hello Tommy! Sorry you couldn't come to our "gathering", I guess that is a
little far to travel! You can buy several kinds of Highlander shirts, plus other
Highlander merchandise, thru the Highlander store. Here is the address to get a
catolog:
Highlander: The Store Send $1.00 along with your
3530 Wilshire Blvd. #1062 name and address to get the
Los Angeles, Ca. 90010 catalog.
They have clothes, videos, audio tapes, posters, and other neat stuff. They did
not say what to send for foreign countries, so I guess if you can't get $1.00,
you could write to them and find out what to do. Also, for other merchandise
related to Adrian Paul, he has his own fan club which he uses to encourage
charity work from his fans. A portion of the membership dues and the merchandise
profits go to charity. The charity is picked by the fans each issue. There are
four issues a year for $15.00 You do not need to be a member to buy the
merchandise. His club address is:
PEACE: The Adrian Paul Fan Club
12439 Magnolia Blvd. #159
North Hollywood, Ca. 91607
Send a SASE to the address to get a membership form and/or merchandise catalog.
He has shirts, hair ties, calendars, mugs, and more. While I'm giving you
addresses, I might as well give you the official Highlander club in Denver,
which put on the con I went to:
The Gathering
P.O. Box 123
Aurora, Co 80040
Send a SASE to them for info as well.
There is a lot of info on America On Line, but I don't know if you can get that
there. There is a lot of fans that write in AOL, and Adrian has been on it live
twice. Jim Byrnes (Joe Dawson) has been on it, and so has Stan Kirsch (Richie
Ryan).
Let me know if I can be of any more assistance, and even if you just want to
comment on the shows! Have you seen the one with Adrian's butt shot yet?
Don't lose your head!

CO> I am watching Highlander with a new actor for Mccloud.
I am assuming you are referring to Adrian Paul, who plays Duncan McCloud in the
television series. Christopher Lambert played Conner McCloud in the movies. In
the first show on the television series, they were both in it. They explained
that they were from the same clan, but 100 years apart. Conner learned about
being an immortal from Ramirez, (Sean Connery's character in the movies), Duncan
learned about being an immortal from Conner. Hopefully this clears that up for
you.
CO> And, this is
CO> on channel 17, USA.. Umm, apparently i don't watch the
CO> only get hooked on it, for it's chivalry and sword action
CO> scenes.. But,
CO> the more i learn of it, i see that it deals with something
CO> that is
CO> kinda close to my sort of interests.. Since, i am a big fan
CO> or person
CO> that is really interested in the life of those chilvalry
CO> years. And,
I'm glad that you are taking interest in it, I think it is a great show! I will
tell you that USA is showing the shows out of order, even mixing the first and
second season. Someone told me that they will show second season for awhile, and
then they go back and pick up something from the first season. So if it seems
confusing, let me know and I will straighten it out for you. The swordfighting
is great, Adrian Paul knows 7 forms of martial arts and he is a professional
dancer, so he definitely has control of his actions. The swordmaster says there
is nothing Adrian can't do with a sword. The actor who plays Methos was into
fencing for awhile, so he also is familiar with sword play.
I bought a replica of the sword that Duncan uses in the show, it is a beautiful
sword. There are a lot of pretty carvings in the handle, and it is very well
balanced. I want to display it as soon as I find a wall mount.
CO> show.. Might try to start watching the hour episode than
CO> the sword
CO> secens.. To learn of more.
Are you here in the Tulsa, Okla area? If you are, I have been trying to get
together a group of fans to share my pre-recorded euro-version videos of the
series with. If you aren't, well, keep watching and share with me what you like.
I love to talk about it!
