From my perch I saw this come out of the gravity well from Jo De Man:

[> Jo De Man [> What is libertyCon ? (probably a stupid question, but
[> hey, I am over here in Belgium)

Whoops! OK, LibertyCon is a small limited attendence SF/Fantasy convention
held in my city, Chattanooga, Tennessee, every summer [it's the second
convention we have in town, the first being ChattaCon].

[> Star Hawk [> Unsure if there will be any more novels set in the
[> Starfire RPG universe, but it's always possible.

[> Jo De Man [> Still has a lot of potential. Starfire RPG ??? What
[> is that all about ?

I may have misspoken about it being a RPG type game, i've never seen it
myself, but an ad for the books states: "See this strategy game come to
explosive life in these grand space adventures!" So it seems that the game came
out first and the novels were written from the basis of the game.

[> Jo De Man [> -Oath of Swords (hope he writes a sequel to that one)

[> Star Hawk [> You're in luck, he said that there's more of Bahzell's
[> travels ........ the cover artist blew it with the ears of Bahzell
[> and Brandark; hradani ears are more like those of a fox, and are
[> closer to the top of the head rather than the sides.

[> Jo De Man [> He looked a bit like an overgrown vulcan...

Face it, the only thing the artist really got right was the size...

[> Jo De Man [> -Mutineers' Moon & Armageddon Inheritance (gimme more!)

[> Star Hawk [> There may be one more book in this `universe' to be
[> written sometime in the future.

[> Jo De Man [> Heard his next book (inheriters of the empire or
[> something like that) is in this series (sounds good)

     Well and good.

[> Jo De Man [> [Path of the Fury] We can only hope ... It
[> ended in a nice setup for further adventures

     If the Muse strikes...

[> Jo De Man [> [Harrington series] .......... Whish he would get her
[> back in command of a Manticorian ship ... He might want to ease
[> off the duelling bit for a while ... She certainly sliced op the
[> bad guys in the last book...

She'll be back on a Manticorian command deck... it just may take a while
[maybe next book, or the book after].

[> Star Hawk [> ... might want to pick up three books written by
[> Steve White [Weber's coauthor on the Starfire books], THE
[> DISINHERITED, LEGACY, and DEBT OF AGES, from Baen Books.

[> Jo De Man [> I think I read disinherited a long time ago.. could
[> you say what the plot was about ?

While the American/Russian Space Force terraforming of Mars is reaching a
critical stage, the political situation back on Earth is turning their backs to
space. Then the aliens arrive; human aliens, handsome and pacifist, with bad
news: a totally alien militant race is attacking them and they need help. Now
the Space Force has something worse to worry about than going out of business...

[> Jo De Man [> Am i mistaken or does he drag in some arthurian stuff
  [> in it ??

     Starting with the second book.

[> Jo De Man [> PS : try some of the wing commander books (like in the
[> computer game) Not the fist one by lackey or the last one (heart of
  [> the tiger) I think you'll like them ...

Already have some of them. I wasn't all that impressed with them.

Actually the movie came first. Then came a series featuring a different
actor from the movies (and a character with remarkable similarities but
a different first name).

 > Genius-level work often emanates from those with big egos.

John Huston was egotistical, too, and he's one of my favorite directors. To my
perception, Kubrick has always had the attitude that his shit doesn't stink.
That bugs me. A little humility from the man would do wonders for my opinion of
him.

 > Personnally, I think Kubrick's "Dr. Strangeloe" is the

Agreed on both counts. I'm not disputing the man's skill, I'm just saying that I
personally don't like him, and I don't consider him an artist without peer. He
has done some things that were astonishing, and he's done some things that were
at best dog puke. High-dollar dog pu, but still dog puke. Even Shakespeare had
his off days. So did Hitchcock. Kubrick's not immune. He just doesn't like to
own up to his mistakes.

And here we come to another pet peeve concerning this man. Kubrick is a
DIRECTOR. He tells actors what to do. Sometimes he's a producer, and sometimes
he writes. He doesn't do everything on a film. Without Doug Trumbull's effects
and Arthur Clarke's story, 2001 wouldn't exist. Kubrick may have been the
ramrod, but 2001 was made by a large, very talented team. Not by one egotistical
auteur.

The auteur approach is something that really bugs me bad. A lot of filmmakers
have this attitude, and it's annoying. No matter how good they are, they have
nothing without the writers, actors, effects people, and all the other myriad
laborers behind the scenes. Someone should remind them of this...

Agreed. I don't think Dkimmel and/or whoever else is a moron because they
disagree with me. I reserve the right to my opinion, and respect their right to
their opinion. 'Nuff said.

Perhaps they will wait longer to develop the plot and script. Dr. Who is a
sci-fi production that will be compared to the British editions of the show, so
caution by Amblin is perhaps warranted in light of their absymal lack of
creative capacities in seaQuest. More importantly, whichever production company
films the American Dr. Who needs assurances that Ambiln will do more work more
often to learn what is *great* SF and be less obstructive with those who
actually know what Dr. Who actually is and what they want to accomplish by
making an American Dr. Who.

My chief problem was seaQuest was a too limited in scope to be a weekly TV
series. A number of SF shows would have been better as a ongoing series of SF TV
movies because their creative focus and concept wasn't very adaptable to weekly
SF TV but as a set of five to nine two hour movies a season, Battlestar
Galactica would have lasted far longer than two seasons. 26 episodes was asking
too much of audiences.

Alien Nation will probably continue as SF TV movies because there's too little
capacity for new stories to make 26 episodes each year.

What is the problem is that Follywood is made of people who weren't able to
function in the subjects in high school and college where they could
*understand* the works of SF well enough to understand why their previous SF
shows have proven to be creatively unsatisfying or a total failure.

For most SF, some literacy in the sciences and technology is supremely necessary
to understand the difference between Science Fiction and Science Fantasy. Most
Follywood executives, producers and writers are functionally incapable of
operating in a environment where scientific literacy is necessary to their TV
work. This is also why bad technobabble is so grotesque, because the executive
producer isn't very scientifically literate enough to write credible
technobabble that isn't contradictory to itself or known science.

Star Trek proved that a doctorate in physics isn't really necessary, just
reasonable flexibility in the creative producers and flexibility in the studio
that is making the show.

Feedback, anyone?
