spent $1000 on those things.

Amongst other crazy merchandise I've seen them sell is a limited
edition autographed Star Trek telephone calling card! I've seen
similar cards depicting comic book heroes.

Unfortunately, many fans buy this stuff because they think they
are showing what big fans they are. To me, all this shows is
that you have access to money, or a high line of credit on your
VISA, not that you are fan.

Being able to see Gary Graham, Eric Pierpoint, and Michael
O'Hare in person at Cons like we did, being able to shake
hands with Jon Pertwee, and getting their autographs in person,
is of more value to me than anything that can be bought off of
QVC.

Being around and talking with people who really enjoy SF for
what it is, is what fandom is all about.

As you've probably heard by now, it's the same one. For one week of the
DC/Marvel, Marvel/DC crossover, there will be an amalgamated universe,
which will include the above characters, for 12 issues in all. It will
be followed by the 4th issues of the limited series, which is supposed
to 'unzip' the universes again.

KW> Even I might watch this episode on Monday. I've never liked Q, myself.
KW> Think the writers made a big mistake with this character. Never, ever
KW> have a 'Superman' type character on the show!!! The only way to have
KW> interesting plots that don't repeat themselves endlessly is to remove
KW> his powers..and then he's no longer Q! And if he keeps his powers,
KW> then it's just a rehashed story! Stupid move to have come up with this
 KW> guy!

KA> Your comments remind me of an old saying about fantasy stories: "If
KA> anything is possible, nothing is interesting.

 Exactly, Kevin! Thanks! :>

KW> If Q appears on V'ger...then why isn't the show finished then?? He
KW> simply pops them back to Fed space and everyone goes home. This won't
KW> happen, of course....but I bet you the reasons this doesn't take place
KW> won't be satisfactory. Therefore, once again, it'll prove that this
KW> character just doesn't work as a viable plot device.

KA> Actually, there is a real good reason for this. The scent which would
KA> explain it would proceed something like this:
KA> Janeway: "Q, will you send us back to Federation space?"
 KA> Q: "No."
 KA> Janeway: "Why not?"
 KA> Q: "I don't feel like it. See ya."

Probably....I'll try to sit down tonite at 8:00pm with an open mind.
But gotta tell....as much as I don't like the character of Q....
well, I hate the character of Riker much more!

 Now Beverly....then we're talking!!! :)

My taste in the super-hero genre has not been in Marvel's corner for some years
but the Generation - X movie was not the total disaster that reading some of the
reviews had led me to expect.

By no means was this a Batman or Superman epic but it did translate into a live
action framework the idea that The White Witch, Havoc, and various other marvel
characters could be presented with out completely blowing it. I have not read
any of the Generation - X stories so I did not go into the movie with many
pre-concived ideas as to what the characters should look like (with the
exception of JL) and was pleased with the translation to the screen. Over all
a passable effort and probably as good as we have seen from Marvel Entertainment
in some time.

Ok, Your last traffic hit Reunion on the 13th. at that time I got some 12
messages dated between the January 29th and Feb 3rd.

12 messages arrived tonight
1 dated 2/03
2 dated 2/04
9 dated 2/14

These messages are the first that I have seen since the previous batch that
arrived on the 13th. I find it a tad odd that both slugs of traffic are an even
Dozen almost as if your sysop has a minimum size packet to be reached before the
packet is sent on to his hub. I will keep an eye on this and let you know what
I see in the future. Best send you replied via net-mail and postings if you
want timely transfer of traffic.

what did you think of the Q/Voyager ep?

Looks like Q will be up to some of his old tricks and I thought that the "Q"uinn
might have been interesting as a crewman but we will never know now. Himlock
(ms) makes sencebut I will bet that there were a lot of viewers that had that go
right over their heads.

 THW> Anyway...
THW> Have you by any chance read Harry Turtledove's "World War:" Saga?

    -----snip-----

THW> Mostly I just lurk here, but I couldn't pass this one up. I really
THW> do recomment the books... the first one is titled "World War: In the
 THW> Balance". Seeya around

 PA> GREAT SERIES!!!
PA> Turtledove is a genius... I've got a friend who, though he
PA> hates SF in any form, is a WWII buff and is goading me to let
PA> him borrow "Tilting the Balance"!

I just picked that one up... loved the cover art.
I started buying them when Ballantine (DelRey) decided they didn't
want to buy my alternate WW-2 trilogy... though they were kind of
interested in it for a while. I wish I'd come up with the idea.

PA> The one thing that really interests me about the series is
PA> that, aside from the spacecraft and hydrogen-based propulsion
PA> systems, The Race is not that far ahead of "current-day"
PA> technology. In that light, the books become a stage for an
PA> "are we any better today than we were 50 years ago" comparison.
 PA> Any thoughts?

I *loved* it when The Race popped off their nukes in the
upper atmosphere to fry communications and such... and the vacuum
tube tech of the era just shrugged it off. The books are
pretty interesting in how the tech levels "even out" because The
Race is fighting a "come as you are" sort of war. It also shows
how "lower tech" doesn't necessarily equate with "inferior tech".
I'm something of an alternate history SF buff, having
gotten well and thoroughly hooked by H. Beam Piper's "Lord Kalvan
of Otherwhen". Read "The Man in the High Castle" shortly after
I found "Kalvan", and have been searching out alt-hist ever since.
Speaking of which; have you read "Guns of the South"?
