CR>however, in order to gain the respect of your crew so that they will trust y

Women do this all the time, Christian. In fact, "compassion" is often
classed as a specifically "female" trait, which men are sometimes afraid
of showing lest they look "weak".

FG> Maybe I missed something all along, but isn't Captain Janeway actually
FG>married to that guy?

It was made pretty clear that they don't live in the same house, even
when she's on Earth - she asked him to pick up her pregnant dog at the
vet's, and take her home to _his_ house, and he said he'd already picked
up the dog's bed from Janeway's house.

It seems unlikely that they'd be maintaining separate residences if they
were actually married, and they never specifically said that they were
married.

Um, there's been some experience in the US military that female trainers

the _other_ gender, other things being equal.

CR>TS> DJ>> That's really quite an idiotic statement. Giving orders is not a

CR>TS> CR> really? then what is? femininty is just the opposite, and befor
CR>TS> CR> you go plundering into a losing argument, you should scan the
CR>TS> CR> definition in your webster's... submissiveness, not agression, is o
CR>TS> CR> of the "defining characteristics" as you so well put it, of the
CR>TS> CR> feminine behavioral pattern.

CR>TS> Barefoot, pregnant and in the kitchen, eh? And just what century do you
CR>TS> think you're living in?

CR>TS> You might like that kind of woman, but most children want everything the
CR>TS> way, too. I prefer a partner, not a slave.

CR> yes... alot of people (especially women) would like to change centuries of
CR>evolution in just a few decades, but it's not so easy.

You're completely mistaken as to what "centuries of evolution" have made
women.

Passivity and inability/lack of desire to assert authority have _never_
been good survival strategies for women, even during the brief periods
of extreme prosperity when most men could actually afford to support
non-working wives. You see, even if all you do is stay home and take
care of the house and kids, you've got to be able to assert authority
over the kids, the household help if you can afford to hire it, the
tradesmen who come to do work on the house or install newly-purchased
household equipment, etc. Passive little shrinking violets tend to be
_bad_ at these things, and hence failures as "traditional" wives, and if
the marriage survives at all it's because the husband takes on the
killing burden of doing _everything_, which is no easier for men than
for women.

It's quite true that most of human history has seen a division of labor
between men and women, with men doing more of the "away from home" work
and women doing more of the "in and around the home" work, but through
most of human history, women's work has been as essential to the
economic support of the family as men's work, and even in the brief
periods when that was not true for substantial numbers of people, the
work still needed to get _done_, and that still meant someone had to be
in charge - women, as well as men, have been exercising authority for
all of human history.

CR>my personal work as
CR>tatoo artist has proven to me that the female sex is striving to the extreme
CR>become male. sometimes i laugh... but i always give them their tat's.

Oooo - a businessman does what he's paid for! Wonder of Wonders!

Christian, you're not seeing an ordinary cross-section of _either_ men
or women, working as a tatoo artist. Trust me.

CR>i do
CR>expect to change anything, mr. sullivan, but i will propose to you this: com
CR>soon we are going to see a change. i see it happening every day. things ar
CR>losing their fast-paced "lets all be men" attitude, and women are beginning
CR>realize what they really want (ooooh.. i can just hear the frantic pounding
CR>girls at keyboards everywhere, heh heh).. i'll leave it at that, so as not t
CR>stray too far off the Trek subject.

What women are losing is the willingness to put up with the "superwoman"
role, working a fulltime career AND doing or being responsible for ALL
the work at home and having SOLE responsibility for the kids.

But they're responding by demanding that the workload be more evenly
divided. _Both_ men and women are demanding more flexibility from their
employers, and where one income is large enough, there are more
housewives, but also more househusbands, depending on the relative
earning power and personalities involved.

TR> LED> You point out one glaring difference between US and British TV,

TR> > But don't forget, for every BBC Shakespeare production, there were half

TR> And in some cases worse. As bad as some of the American "jiggle

TR>for sheer lowbrow comedy.

Jack, I've been trying to _forget_ Benny Hill. Why did you have to
remind me? :)

TR> Ec> The truth is, we have no idea what may survive from our own time to be

TR> Heh. An image just came to me, from "Demolition Man". The oldies
TR>station played "minitunes", which were once advertising jingles of the late
TR>20th Century.

The scary thing is, though, some of them are _good_. And I wouldn't be
even a little bit surprised to see _some_ commercials survive into the
future as much-admired examples of great art produced for television.
[Though not all of them will necessarily have been any good as
_commercials_ - during the Superbowl on Sunday, one of the commercials
was a truly captivating piece about horses playing football. I couldn't
begin to place the product, though, until I realized that the horses
were _Clydesdales_: it was supposed to be a Budweiser ad, but they
didn't show either the product or the product name prominently enough.]
