NS>-- Nicolai Shapero, the Mad Russian Sysop of StormGate Aerie

NS> Origin:(1:102/524)

There have been variable findings of studies of women in 20th
Century Terran combat. Some studies have recommended admitting women to
combat. Others recommend waiting for a major combat environment to test
the performance of women in battle.

Nevertheless, a operational dynamic is invovled in the M.I. in
_Starship Troopers_ where power armor is used to upgrade the fighting
ability and natural physical skills of the infantry involved.

To justify the technology, decisive and effective offensive
operations would be necessary by hypermobile, hyperstrong soldiers who
move at nearly 75 miles/hour (@ 120 km/hour) on the ground and can jump
about 0.6 miles into the air (1 km) across horizontal distances ranging
from fractions of a mile or kilometer to several miles or kilometers
would be critical to victory in combat.

Additionally, Heinlein also possibly respected the sensitive
publishing executives of 1958 by casting men in combat roles in
_Troopers_. Heinlein, knowing in 1958 there might not be any studies
of womem in combat before _Troopers_ would be filmed might have had
honest literary doubts about portraying female Mi as able to integrate
sensory imput *only in power suits* to carry out lighting strike
offensive charges. (Please remember the novel is set in the mid-22nd
Century, and that females are trooper shuttle and starship pilots in _Troopers_)

Last Heinlein was a genteel Missourian who might have privately felt
women could fight in wars but knew publicizing that opinion during the
Cold War might have ended his science-fiction writing career.

I think the most controversial element that is likely to be
rewritten or treated differently in 1996 terms is the political theory
of _Starship Trooper_ Terran Federation Government.

In light of the turmoil the Cold War caused in the voting public,
Heinlein evidently rethought the wisdom of popular election by an very
wide electorate "less than soundly" educated--in RAH's private opinion
in 1958--population of that day.

Good job Heinlein isn't around to witness the 1990's! Witnessing out
times would have literally killed him.

Not a mistake. It's stated in the film that the energies of the Nexus are
very damaging to spacecraft... and it does you no good if the ship blows up and
kills you before you can cross over.

unknown.
