No, women aren't in the M.I. On the other hand, men virtually
never get positions as starship pilots (but the women do). Both jobs
are dangerous. In fact, in the culture described in Starship
Troopers, the military goes out of its way to make sure EVERY military
position is dangerous (even if it consists of being a test subject for
medical experiments because you have no aptitude for *anything*--but
you have a legal right to undergo military service to earn your right
to vote.)
Any job which *isn't* dangerous and which can be done by a civilian
*is* done by a civilian. ALL the M.I.'s fight, from the commander to
the cook and the chaplain.

I couldn't read TOXIC SPELL DUMP either. I got farther than you
did, but not by much.
I'd recommend NONINTERFERENCE--its probably my favorite of his
novels. It's about a Federation Survey Ship which encounters a
primitive culture while exploring. One crewman violates the
Noninterference Directive (sounds familiar, doesn't it?) and promptly
gets cashiered in disgrace. But the deed is done.
Centuries later, the region is re-surveyed, and the ramifications
of his actions are...astounding. The Survey Service bigwigs try very
hard to cover up this embarrassment lest they get their funding cut by
Federation representatives who don't like the Service anyhow. Lots of
intrigue, backstabbing and murder ensue.
GUNS OF THE SOUTH is also very good. And his WORLDWAR series (two
paperback, the third in hardback currently) are also worth reading.

That would have worked...if they'd ended the series. Which,
admittedly, many fans might have preferred to what they did.
But I think that given the realities they were faced with, the
producers and writers did a good job.
Linda Hamilton was leaving the series. So they had to a) end the
series, b) kill her off, or c) have her "leave" in some fashion
without dying.
Option A probably wasn't seriously considered.
Option C was untenable--if the characters were so desperately in
love, I can't imagine anything that could realistically separate them
*except* death. And if something had, the show would have to revolve
around their endless attempts to get back together. Would the fans
have accepted it if Vincent had shrugged and gone on with his life
(and other adventures) while Catherine was missing or in jail or
living in LA making more money with L.A. LAW firm? I think not.
Which left killing her off.
And yes, frankly, I was annoyed by the ignominious way in which she
died. But having her character die was the only real choice, I think.
And I liked the third-season storyline. I especially enjoyed the
actor who played Gabriel. And I liked the lady detective. The
writing was good (especially in that the characters were *thinking*--
which makes up for a lot in my book).

Thanksgiving this year, so that's why I answered as I did. OOOps.
