Safe for whom? Dennis Miller once posed this thought:
When an unemployed steelworker can sit at home and pay $29.95 to
have "sex" with Cindy Crawford or Claudia Schiffer, crack is going to
seem like bubble gum by comparison.

Whoa, Cool! The Raven and Chip Griffin are inna cat fight about "nuclear"!
TR> You aren't thinking it through. Put the collectors in orbit.
TR> Several

TR> Have the collectors convert the light into microwaves, beam the

TR> microwaves to
TR> electricity. Simple. Large initial investment which pays for itself
TR> very quickly.
True enough, Jack, but the problems and the lead time would put it into the 22nd
century the way things go in the present. And until the dependence on fossil
fuels is gone, it won't happen any faster.
We have nuclear *now*. What we need is education and dispelling of
mythical/apocalyptic mis/disinformation. Without an informed populace, the "no
nukes" crowd will have their say, as will those who think solar is science
fiction. They will until oil/gas/coal are prohibitively expensive and in short
supply.

I won't try to speak for the rest of this bunch, but personally I think
Kristen Cloke, the woman who plays Vansen, is a fairly talented actress,
in addition to being a seriously hot babe. Maybe it's just my
middle-aged hormones talking, but to these old eyes she oozes sex
appeal. I know that sounds sexist as hell, but it's true. Something
about the woman makes me want to grab her and go running to the bushes.
She is living, breathing proof that a woman can be tough, smart, and
sexy all at once.

Steve keeps it under control by not talking about it. Plus, there's been
so damn many gallons of water under the bridge since then that maybe it
doesn't bug him anymore...
And I don't _hate_ Kubrick. I dislike him. If I hated him, I'd be
running over his dog with a steamroller. All I'm doing here is
expressing my dislike for a man that I consider to be an arrogant jerk.
Last I heard, it was still legal to express yourself publicly... and
just as legal to disagree with someone else's opinion. I may not agree
with Dkimmel, but I'll defend with my life his right to his opinion.

What SeaQuest deserved was the return of Rockne O'Bannon as showrunner,
instead of a moron like Patrick Hasburgh who cares nothing for internal
logic and accuracy. Rock would've thrown half of last season's episodes
into the dumper on first reading. I stopped watching the show last
season, and when Scheider said he was leaving, that clinched it. He had
it right when he said that they took a well-written, scientifically
accurate (for the most part) show and turned it into Baywatch.
For my money, the best depiction in sf of undersea operations is still
_The Abyss_.

RP> With the dramatic change in focus and casting each season on Seaquest,
RP> it was hard to keep track of what was going on. It's really too bad.
RP> It was starting to be a watchable show (with the exception of the
RP> Supertrain episode). If I were a network programmer, I probably would
RP> have given it the boot after the first season.
So would I, except I think Amblin had a deal with NBC for a guaranteed
two-season run. First season was very derivative of TNG, but it was
still a good one. The show went downhill fast when O'Bannon pulled out,
and picked up speed when Hasburgh came aboard...
RP> Science Fiction has seldom received big numbers, with the exception of
RP> Star Trek. It remains a programming niche, and probably will for the
RP> forseeable future.
Ah, but look at it from the viewpoint of network execs. The prevalent
attitude has been that sci-fi doesn't work on television. Star Trek
can't be sci-fi, because it does work on television. This one blind spot
is what keeps anything other than Trek from having a decent shot on the
tube; if it's skiffy and it ain't Trek, they think the audience won't go
for it. Anytime an sf/fantasy series fails, they point to it as further
proof of their contention. Look at V. Look at The Flash. Look at
Galactica. On and on.
One bright spot; Alien Nation is returning to Fox. That's the smartest
move they've made since Space: Above And Beyond went into production...

I've seen JM two weeks ago and it seemed good enough. Reeves is not the best
