OE> Stories like Star Trek or Babylon 5 would be impossible. Travel to
OE> the nearest star system, a mere 4.3 light years off, would take
OE> decades, perhaps generations.
Quite true. Indeed, the crew of the USS Voyager, if they could get close
enough to lightspeed in normal space could get home in perhaps a few months of
ship's time, but there's that matter of being 27,000 (I think) years out of
date....
In `The Forever War,' it was also expected that ships, unable to use the
stargates that got them out there, would come straggling back, over
thousands of years, likewise at relativistic speeds.
If it can be kept operating this long of course, Voyager has the option of a
70 year trip home at warp speeds. but at least about the same time will have
passed at home, too. Recall also when Q sent the Enterprise-D to the first
encounter with the Borg, they were two years out of Federation space at maximum
warp. And in TOS, even with the Kelvan-augmented warp drives, it was to be a 300
year voyage tothe Andromeda galaxy (2.2 millionlight-years)
Sometimes you can't go *enough* faster than light....
In one of Niven's Known Space stories, a character makes a passing reference
to someone who went off to `the edge of the universe' in a barely sublight
ramship that *also* had hyperdrive. (Standard hyperdrive, not the level II type
seen in `At The Core') Seems that as far as ship time was concerned, he was
better off flying at relativistic speeds, than through hyperspace to travel
10-odd billion light-years.
And, of course, this guy had no expectation of coming back.....

JH> A rather interesting pattern of city lights on the surface of

You'll have to fill me in on this one, as I didn't notice a pattern.
JH> What is with that funky music and Sheridan in the shower?
More of the magic of Christopher Franke, I'd imagine. Don't you
listen to music when you're showering?
JH> I thought Draal was a bit of a pompous, preachy fellow during
JH> Voice in the Wilderness, but it is as nothing as compared with
JH> his younger self. The content didn't seem excessively
JH> self-promoting, but otherwise his speaking style seems typical
JH> of someone rather full of himself.
Think of Draal as a professor at a major university. These sorts of
folks do often times get a bit full of themselves, and speak
accordingly. I thought the obviously preplanned speech, intercut
with more conversational phrases was brilliant and funny.
JH> And the way Londo and Refa's faces are partially shadowed by
^^^^^^^^
JH> the poor lighting during the argument.... laying it on a bit
JH> thick perhaps? ;)
Think about it. ;~)
JH> It's mildly interesting that this time, the Epsilon 3
JH> installation that is visited, and where Draal is kept, is only
JH> three miles beneath the surface. I seem to remember that it
JH> was five miles in VitW.
Assuming I can remember, I'll attempt to verify this.
JH> I thought the Narn should have had more fighters, though.
There may have been more fighters, but most of the combat was viewed
on the scale of capital ships. Fighters were lost against the
background most of the time.
JH> Okay, did anyone else not care for the intercuts of G'Kar
JH> praying? I dunno, I just never cared for having my space
JH> battles constantly interrupted, just a couple of times would
JH> have gotten the point across.
I think this was supposed to make the battle more personal, as well
as reflect G'Kar's foreboding about it. I didn't have a problem
with it.
JH> Does anyone get the impression G'Kar knows what's happening to
JH> the Narn fleet as he's praying?
I don't think that G'Kar necessarily knows, but his knowledge of the
Shadows, and his assumptions about their involvement with the
Centauri explain his behavior, I think.
JH> Another odd bit is that the double-ship that had a leg blown
JH> off seems almost adrift in space as the other double-ship
JH> merges with it. This is another argument for organic
JH> technology on the part of the Shadows, and against it being
JH> used as well, any wounds can affect the whole creature
One might think that even the relatively small amount of damage done
to the Shadow cruiser was enough to incapacitate it, because it was
in *pain*.

Remember, the Vorlons still have to give the impression that they're
'just like everybody else,' rather than gadding about saying, "Hi.
We're the Ancient Ones, and we're here to help you kick some Shadow
ass." Filing protests, and doing nothing to back them up, makes the
Vorlons look just as ridiculous as everyone else in the Council
chambers.
