JB> Goodman would do well as The Ventriloquist.

Well, here's where we separate the men from the boys, or the real
Batman fans from the hangers-on. I recognize only three of these
supervillains' names (Mad Hatter, Ra's Al Ghul, and Deadshot). Which
is probably bad news for the marketing department at Warner/DC, since
I was heavy into superhero comics at one time. But as Batman wasn't
one of my regular fixes, I don't know who a lot of these guys/gals
are.

On (18 Jun 95) Jack Butler wrote to Brian Henderson...

JB> ... "The Death Star will be in range in 5 minutes."

Alfred Hitchcock occasionally spoke of a concept called
"refrigerator logic". By which he meant, a plot element that would
hang together long enough for the movie goer to enjoy the film, get
home, open the refrigerator for a midnight snack and *then* think,
"Hey, wait a minute..." If the plot held together that long, he
considered it a success, even if later you could pick it apart.

Your tagline reminded me of the most durable piece of refrigerator
logic I know of.
It took me fourteen years to think, "Hey, wait a minute...."

At the climax of STAR WARS, the Death Star is closing on the rebel
base on the moon of the gas giant. The fighters are sent out in a
desperate attempt to destroy the Death Star before it gets into
position to destroy the moon. And they succeed.
Unfortunately, there are two possible solutions that would have
enabled the Death Star to win, had they been employed.
   1. The Death Star is capable of hyperdrive. Why not *flit* to the
other side of the planet?
   2. Why go AROUND the gas giant, when they could simply BLOW IT UP?
Even if the explosion didn't destroy the moon, a second shot would
have been easily made.

   Ah well, refrigerator logic....

E>FE>While UPN is showing NEW episodes of Legend, and USA is showing NEW
E>FE>episodes of Tekwar! Go figure! :-)

E>But Tekwar is cancelled, and Legend is cancelled with some slight hope
E>that they might get a second chance as a mid-season replacement.
E>Those \are\ throwaway episodes, as far as USA and UPN are concerned.

E>Do we really want BABYLON 5 to be treated the way the \cancelled\
E>shows are being treated? I know \I\ don't.:)

I see no REAL evidence that TekWar and Legend have been cancelled. When
I read about it in TV Guide, that's when I'll believe it.

In the meantime, I think PTEN should show the last 4 episodes... THIS
SEASON. They aren't treating B5 like a "cancelled" show by doing so.
They're simply finishing the season the way it was scheduled to be
finished. To allow PTEN the EXCUSE you and others have provided is
nothing more than trying to put a good "spin" on the wrong decision!

Elisabeth Carey again tries to put a good "spin" on the decision to
delay the airing of 4 season 2 episodes until season 3...

E>The \dedicated\ fans would see these episodes, but B5 can't survive on
E>just the most fanatical of its fans, any more than any other series.

You don't make any sense! If B5 just barely picked up enough new viewers
this season to get renewed, how is saving 4 episodes going to guarantee
that the show will attract MANY new viewers next season? What is PTEN
going to do this November... announce during B5 advertisements... "We
saved 4 episodes for you from last year! These will get you caught up on
the B5 saga and make up for the 40 you missed!" Yeah, right... If they
could miss 40 episodes and make up for it in 1/10th of the time, what
would that say about B5? How about... it ain't that deep? Yeah, that'll
really encourage new viewers to watch.

E>Show four first-run episodes in July, when the more casual fans WON'T
E>be watching, and you damage their ability to pick up the thread when
E>the new season premieres, and increase the likelihood that they'll
E>stop watching.

Baloney! New viewers are already ticked off about the B5 story arc.
Saving 4 episodes isn't going to fill in that much of the gap. After
all, "And Now For A Word" was supposed to have accomplished this,
already.

E>And if too many "casual" fans stop watching, the dedicated B5 fan is
E>going to be out of luck, because the series will be cancelled.

With the way PTEN affiliates have been handling B5 (our local affiliate
just switched it AGAIN; now it's supposed to be on Saturday night
instead of Friday...) CASUAL fans are pretty much out of the loop,
anyway. IMO, PTEN should not take such drastic measures and perhaps
alienate LOYAL fans in the process!

Well, right now I'm NOT watching... because I've seen every episode and
they're in reruns. Next season I'll be watching to see if they learned
anything from industry pundits who have given the show less than glowing
marks. Perhaps the entire next season will wind up being as good as this
season's first 9 episodes, and not just an extension of the lackluster
final few episodes...

MJ>I think Torres *could* have dealt with her problem during subsequent
MJ>episodes, even without being the focus of the storyline. They spend
MJ>time "developing character" on the characters anyhow. They could
MJ>spend the time on Torres as she deals with the radical change she's
MJ>undergone.

Yeah! Instead of her solving upteen technical problems with more inane
technobabble, this would be a refreshing change of pace. Just imagine, a
sentient creature dealing with a real-life problem! What a unique
concept for post-TOS Star Trek! :-)

MJ>(For that matter, I'd like to see the repercussions of Neelix and Kes
MJ>each having only one lung. I was rather shocked by that episode--in
MJ>that they *didn't* wave a magic wand over them. They had to settle
MJ>for a less than ideal solution, because restoring Neelix to his

MJ>I was impressed. Unfortunately, that too has been glossed over. Now
MJ>its as if it never happened.)

So "glossed over", I had completely forgotten how the problem had been
solved! Neelix and Kes... with just 1 lung each... You'd think there
would be some complications down the road...

RL>He wrote the story from December 10th to December 12th 1984
RL>(according to the insert).

RL>So, although Harlan may be notorious for delays, he is also capable
RL>of writing stories with incredible power and lasting impact in a very
RL>short time too.

Well, that's kind of what William Shatner's Star Trek memories said...
that his problem is not the actual writing, but motivating himself to
get started on a new project.

RL>I've been on board since issue #1 of Rabbit Hole and find the
RL>material to be rivetting.

To be perfectly honest, I have a collection of Ellison's stories (it's a
hard-bound book almost 3 inches thick), but I have never been able to
get into his work. I don't read much sci-fi any more, but I was an avid
reader of Arthur C. Clarke at one time. Up until recently, I read just
about every ST:TOS novel I could get my hands on. However, the series
has taken a definite downturn, with less innovation and more reliance on
murder and political intrigue. So, I haven't read a ST:TOS novel in
quite a long time. Since I found the first 2 Babylon 5 novels totally
disappointing, I'm hoping the X-Files series will be better. I have the
second in the series (they were sold-out of the first...)

Have you seen any of Ellison's "editorials" on the Sci-Fi Channel? In
his last tirade, he gave a scathing denunciation against trek fiction.
He said that sci-fi fans were missing out on excellent original science
fiction because publishers won't bring in stuff from outside the USA.

Okay, Brian, I think we missed some episodes or something, because I had no idea
Ann knew that Duncan was immortal! Never did I see an episode where she found
out about it and neither did I see an episode where it was told that Ann is
pregnant! I am just baffled! When on earth did all of this happen?
