Hello Star !

05 Dec 95, Star Hawk writes to Jo De Man:

SH> Whoops! OK, LibertyCon is a small limited attendence SF/Fantasy
SH> convention held in my city, Chattanooga, Tennessee, every summer [it's
SH> the second convention we have in town, the first being ChattaCon].

Thanks .... if I am ever there... when it's happening .... I'll go look ;-)
(something tells me chances aren't all that high)

[>> Jo De Man [> Still has a lot of potential. Starfire RPG ??? What
[>> is that all about ?
SH> I may have misspoken about it being a RPG type game, i've never
SH> seen it myself, but an ad for the books states: "See this strategy
SH> game come to explosive life in these grand space adventures!" So it
SH> seems that the game came out first and the novels were written from
SH> the basis of the game.

Probably an older (or newer) reprint.

[>> of Bahzell and Brandark; hradani ears are more like those of a
[>> fox, and are closer to the top of the head rather than the sides.
[>> Jo De Man [> He looked a bit like an overgrown vulcan...
SH> Face it, the only thing the artist really got right was the
 SH> size...
[>> Jo De Man [> Heard his next book (inheriters of the empire or
[>> something like that) is in this series (sounds good)
 SH> Well and good.

Any idea when it will be out ? (the sooner the better)

SH> She'll be back on a Manticorian command deck... it just may take
SH> a while [maybe next book, or the book after].

Yeah, will just have to wait.

SH> turning their backs to space. Then the aliens arrive; human aliens,
SH> handsome and pacifist, with bad news: a totally alien militant race is
SH> attacking them and they need help. Now the Space Force has something
SH> worse to worry about than going out of business...

I read it a long time ago. (I think it was one of the first books I read in a
language other than dutch ... I'll have to look ... probably still around
somewhere !)

 SH> Star Hawk, the EchoTrickster

        Bye ! ,
                Jo

PS : Another book I liked was called 'FROST' ; I think it was written by Robin
W Bailey (or something like that). Ever heard about it ? (the follow-ups where
out of print by the time I read it)

Hi Todd! You evidently have entirely TWISTED NY MESSAGE, made it seem
something which it was not and you have stated something purely WRONG.

You stated:

-> Whoa, Cool! ROBERT LIDGREN and BRION LIENHART are inna cat fight
-> about "KUBRICK COMMENTS"!

Nothing could be farther from the truth.

1. I wrote saying that I thought "Dr. Strangelove" was a very satirical
criticism of the more crazy elements of the cold war.

2. He wrote that a Dr. Stranglelove" and "Failsafe" double feature would
   work well together. I agreed.

"Cat fight?" Sorry to disappoint but you did not understand our message
in the slightest.

My question about what had started this Kubrick "thread" was because I
have no access to all of those messages it contained.

NOTE: As far as Stanley Kubrick's work is concerned, I have enjoyed
some of it, found other films less satisfying but do not bow down at ANY
director's altar. What I do admire is excellent story telling in film
whether it is from Kubrick, David Lean, Martin Scorsese, or even Ron
Howard. There have been very fine directors in every decade and I might
note that I was saddened to hear of the recent death of Louis Malle. I
enjoyed his work too.

-> John Huston was egotistical, too, and he's one of my favorite
-> directors. To my perception, Kubrick has always had the attitude that
-> his shit doesn't stink. That bugs me. A little humility from the man
-> would do wonders for my opinion of him.

I would not use those words because I find them offensive. However,
what Kubrick thinks about HIMSELF is of NO interest to me. All I care
about is what he does. The Work. The work speaks for itself. Some is
very good other things are not so good. The point is he DOES SOMETHING
with whatever talents he has. I guess anyone can be a critic.

What will LAST is not what people say about the flaws in others but the
good they do themselves. Sometimes we need to look in the mirror and
ask: "What exactly is it that I am contributing?"
                          ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
That's part of the reason why movie reviews interest me little. I judge
"for myself." True, anyone can have an opinion but, for me that says
little. What really counts is an informed opinion.
                               ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Flaming interests me not in the slightest. Discussing the issues does.

I seem to remember a similar range of messages when David Lynch came out
with Twin Peaks. That series had a science fiction element - or at
least a fantasy element too. Some absolutely hated ...Peaks. Others
thought it was akin to the Cistine Chapel ceiling! I found it to be
interesting because it was often hard to predict what would happen from
week to week. It broke some new ground but will not go down as a series
which permanently altered fiction on TV or in the movies. What I
enjoyed was that Lynch tried something different adn it did draw a
sizeable cult following.

-> film. Without Doug Trumbull's effects and Arthur Clarke's story, 2001
-> wouldn't exist. Kubrick may have been the ramrod, but 2001 was made
-> by a large, very talented team. Not by one egotistical auteur.
-> The auteur approach is something that really bugs me bad. A lot of
-> filmmakers have this attitude, and it's annoying. No matter how good
-> they are, they have nothing without the writers, actors, effects

Your comment made me do some thinking. Might it not be true that
"sometimes" the egotistical auteur is the catalyst who brings together
all that other talent which is so essential? I like Clint Eastwood's
approach as a director much more. He's a real gentleman and yet very,
very, talented. When he made "The Unforgiven" just outside Calgary,
where I live, everyone who came into contact with the man marvelled at
his professionalism but also the way he treated other people - a very
kind man. He's a "class act!"

Maybe in the "creative universe" there IS ROOM for both kinds of
creative talent. The egotist and the down-to-earth gentle person.
No one has to like either but the fact is these two models and others do
exist. Heck, you'll probably run into all these models working and
shopping in the local Walmart too!

-> That's because TV producers make lousy SF. They think that a show
-> will draw a big audience if it has flashy special effects, and big
-> name stars. Never mind that the shows don't make sense, have bad
-> plots, and worse science. If it's bad
-> SF, it's bad TV.

What you say is short but to the point. I agree with you most of the
time on this one. What really makes terrific science fiction or fantasy
has got to be excellent writing. The screenplay. All the visual
effects CAN add impact BUT IT SEEMS TO ME YOU HAVE TO CARE ABOUT THE
CHARACTERS IN SOME WAY AND THIS HAPPENS WHEN THEY ARE NOT JUST CARDBOARD
CHARACTERS.

I think if you look at the original Twilight Zone series or even One
Step Beyond, there were a number of excellent science fiction stories
and virtually no "whizz-bang" special effects and no colour to boot!

I's say your last comment another way: Bad stories ensure bad TV just
as bad stories make for bad movies.

Translating science fiction from novels into the filmed format is and
has alkways been a very tough nut to crack.

Example: Dune. Great novel. Film was a valiant attempt to get some of
the "guts" of the story but translating the metaphysical part isn't very
easy. A giant worm-no problem but mysticism, well... a tough one since
so much about mysticism goes on in the mind and soul

Just a few meanderings of another seeking the truth...

Cheers and all my best,
-Rob
