I think it is a wonderful possibility. True, the technical specs are
awsome and risks do abound but, at least, it's not a "dirty" kind of
reactor like Chernobyl.
I tend to look even more seriously at solar power, wind power and tidal
power as nifty alternatives too. Giant HYDRO projects simply won't fill
the bill down the line.

Wait just a fire-breathin' minute there partner. Look a liitle closer and
you'll see that Todd said that, not me. I love Anne McCaffrey unreservedly.
My only beef is that I've coughed up $30.00 for "one last Pern book" just
about once too often. I would love to see a movie (or six) set on Pern.
BTW, how do you feel about David Crosby as Robinton? O.K., then, how about
Dennis Hopper?

BPL> I like some of Heinlein's work (generally, the juveniles and
BPL> _Friday_) while disliking the rest (any of the
BPL> up-with-freedom-space-and-incest late novels).
Well, to each his own. He did have a bit of a tendency to climb his soapbox
frequently in his last few years. On the other hand, few SF authors (or any
other variety) have had as much to say. I am in complete agreement with him
on the importance of space exploration. Like Mr. Heinlein, had it not been
for medical technology developed by and for the space program, my days on
Time Line 3 would have been greatly shortened. Most of you who weren't
around during the glory days of NASA just can't understand the sense of
excitement and wonder that accompanied each new launch. I remember following
Alan Shepard's Mercury flight on the radio, as we didn't have a TV yet. And
I will never forget being allowed to stay up way past my bedtime to watch
the moon landing (with commentary by Arthur C. Clarke and RAH).
As to up-with-freedom, it's like jazz. If you have to ask, you'll never
know. Great Ghu, man, read your newspaper! For the last fifteen years,
we've had fascist idiots calling themselves conservatives (many of whom
can't spell `conservative', much less define it, much, much less be it)
who seem determined to defacate on the Constitution and wipe themselves
on the Bill of Rights.
I'm a little less enthusiastic about incest, but this may be because my
sister's kind of ugly....

Call it what you like, but there's still a point passed called "going too far
for insufficient reason". If the fans are going to be treated in this manner
(and PernNet's creators were), they'll stop being fans, the money stops coming
in; and just where will Ms McCaffery's estate and lawyers be when that happens?
I'm done, Nicolai; don't bother.

There are no wormholes in real space. There are Black Holes, but,
even those would tear a ship apart, since nothing can go through a
black hole. So, there probably won't be inter stellar travel.

Oh sure. I won't deign to disagree with this. But I think that
the notion of 'lifting' from another source implies a conscious
intent to do so. I don't believe that JMS has done this.
As for inspiration, there are a few ways to look a that as well.
JMS' exposure to anime is at this point, entirely unknown, aside
from the comments he's made. I would hesitate to say that anime has
had an influence on JMS' writing of B5 if the only anime he has
actually seen is 'Sailor Moon.' (I have a rough time with the
imagery of Sheridan fighting the Shadows by yelling things like,
"Moon Scepter Elimination!") On the other hand, if he's been
exposed indirectly to anime by seeing a work that really did lift
heavily from one or more of the serial programs that have been
discussed here earlier, that introduces the possibility of
second-hand (or potentially third or fourth-hand, etc.) lifting.
At any rate, while your point is well taken, I still don't think
that JMS has consciously lifted from anime. As for unconsciously
using elements present in anime to write his story, this is
certainly possible, though I'm still more tempted to go with the
notion of parallel development. One's exposure to something can be
entirely nil, and you can still get production of a work remarkably
similar to that original something.
