I haven't seen "Little Green Men" yet, but I'm just curious as to what
recent DSN episodes you haven't liked. I think all of this season's

"Rejoined") being great.

You're not serious are you? Not that I don't think Hammill would play

Anyway, it's been almost 20 years since Star Wars, so I'd have to say

that's plenty old enough isn't it?

JH> Yes, yes, but that doesn't mean that it should overshadow all

JH> but the problem is that to too many people SF television is
JH> characterized either by Trek or by bad "Sci-Fi" movies. If the
JH> person doesn't like Trek they might not look much further, and
JH> may not even have the chance.

"Should" has nothing to do with it, though. You're dealing with the
realities of free-market economics. STAR TREK, whatever else you can
say about it, has been a money-maker for Paramount for nearly thirty
years. It has, accordingly, become the model for what many people in
and out of the business think of as "science fiction" (in particular,
as financially-lucrative science fiction).

So Star Trek has remained in production (since the first movie) pretty
much non-stop all that time. The public demands it, and they're
willing part with their shekels to get it. So they get lots of it.
And as long as it continues to deliver what the fans want, it will
probably continue indefinitely.

If that squeezes out other forms of SF, or makes their attempts to get
a foot in the door that much harder...that's life. It works the same
way in publishing. Big-name authors can command huge advances and
lots of contractual goodies, sometimes at the expense of lesser or
beginning writers. Even if, as sometimes happens, the big-name writer
isn't as good as the newbie (or isn't anymore, even if he once was).
But the big-name author can coast on his reputations...at least for a
while. But the new guy has to really stand out before he gets
noticed.

For a long time there was no (lasting) tv sf but Star Trek. Now,
finally, we seem to be getting a rash of successful (and generally
quite good) alternatives. X-Files. Highlander. Forever Knight.
Babylon 5, etc. If they succeed, they may open a few eyes to other
possibilities besides Trek. But they've got to work a lot harder than
the Trek crew because they don't have a thirty-year record behind
them. Trek does. It may not be fair, but its the way it is.
