WORKS IN PROGRESS: Changes, Additions, Updates

The DRIN lists only the changes to the Works in Progress report. The
entire current report can be found on the Panix gopher (gopher.panix.com)
in the Del Rey Books subdirectory, under Publishing Information.)

TERRY BROOKS' FIRST KING OF SHANNARA, his eighth Shannara novel and
prequel to THE SWORD OF SHANNARA, debuted in hardcover in March and spent
6 weeks on the _New York Times_ bestseller list. The paperback edition
will be released in the spring of 1997. Mr. Brooks is more than halfway
through the first volume of a new, completely original contemporary
fantasy series, which will be published in the fall of 1997. In March of
next year we plan to reissue all the _Shannara_ books.

CHRIS BUNCH is working on THE SEER KING, the first volume of his solo
fantasy trilogy for Warner/Aspect, and will shortly begin work on THE
DARKNESS OF GOD, the final volume of our _Shadow Warrior_ series.

ALLAN COLE has begun work on the second volume of the _Timura Trilogy_,
his brand-new solo fantasy epic for Del Rey.

ALAN DEAN FOSTER has turned in THE HOWLING STONES, his latest Commonwealth
novel, which will be published in February 1997. It's not a Pip & Flinx
novel. In progress for Del Rey is PARALLELITIES (tentative title) which
will be published early in 1998. Foster's novelette "Our Lady of the
Machine" recently won the Ignotus award (the Spanish Hugo) for the best
piece of short SF translated from a foreign language to appear in Spain in
1995.

KATHERINE KURTZ and ROBERT REGINALD are currently making the last changes
to CODEX DERYNIANUS, an A-to-Z guide to the Deryni world. With Deborah
Turner Harris, Katherine has just completed the latest in her Apprentice
Adept series for Ace. And--at long last!--she has begun work on the
Deryni book weve all been waiting for: KING KELSON'S BRIDE, in which Kelson

finally gets the girl (we hope)! Publication: June 1997.

JULIAN MAY is working on the first volume of her _Rampart Worlds Trilogy_,
but our next book from her will be SKY TRILLIUM in January of 1997. After
that will be the paperback of MAGNIFICAT (currently in hardcover from
Knopf) in April of 1997.

ANNE McCAFFREY has completed her latest novel in the _Freedoms Landing_
series for Ace, as well as a collaboration with Margaret Ball on a novel
based on a comic character Anne created: Acorna, Queen of the Unicorns.
Our next book from her will be an as-yet-untitled Pern novel (published
in the UK as RED STAR RISING), in early 1997.

DONALD McQUINN is working on the sequel to his sf military adventure
novel, WITH FULL HONORS (January 1997).

DEL REY BOOKS--SATISFACTION GUARANTEED

This month begins our Del Rey Satisfaction Guaranteed program with
GRAYHEART by Tara K. Harper. How it works:

If readers are not satisfied with the book, they can mail it directly back

LINGUISTICS AND SCIENCE FICTION NETWORK

Author Suzette Hayden Elgin (NATIVE TONGUE and other really neat SF
novels) publishes a newsletter for anyone interested in science fiction
and linguistics and the conjunction of the two--if you like SF that does
neat stuff with language, this might be for you. Here are the details:

The Linguistics & Science Fiction Network is open to anyone
interested in the linguistics/SF interface. The group's position statement
says that language is our most powerful instrument for bringing about
change, and science fiction is our most powerful instrument for trying out
changes in advance--therefore, the intersection of the two should get our
careful attention. The network's print newsletter (_Linguistics & Science
Fiction_) is sent to members every other month; in the alternate months an
informal L&SF bulletin is sent by e-mail to online members; and the L&SF
staff (Suzette Haden Elgin and George Elgin) are in the preliminary stages
of a project to put two digests (excerpted versions, one for linguistics,
one for SF) of each print issue online as well.

Topics include languages and linguistics in science fiction writing,
cyberspeak and psiberspeak, linguistic relativity, metaphors as perceptual
filters, and the impact of linguistics on SF. L&SF runs 18-20 pages an
issue and has articles, editorials, book reviews, filksongs, a linguistics
comic strip, and more. Memberships are $10 a year U.S., $18 Canadian, $25
other foreign, to Elgin, PO Box 1137, Huntsville AR 72740-1137.
Newsletters and bulletins are included in membership, and the digest
versions will be free. For more information contact ocls@sibylline.com.

IN DEPTH========================================================

J. Gregory Keyes, author of this month's epic fantasy THE WATERBORN, talks
about anthropology and fantasy, and how for him, one leads to the other:

"They say that the center of the cave is guarded by a big snake," my
Choctaw friend tells me, his voice loud and flat in the enclosed space,
"and this whole hill is supposed to be full of _kwanakasha_."

I don't need to hear that. The cave is dark and very narrow--I have to
turn my shoulders sideways to move--and though my head is bumping the
roof, cold water is up to my mouth. A moment ago the wet clay above me
was even lower, with just enough room for my nose to thrust up, like the
snout of a turtle, to sip what seemed like teaspoons of air. Our only
light is the feeble glow of my headlamp, and it reveals almost nothing;
the water remains black mystery, as does the next turn of the cave, where
there may or may not be any airspace. I'm scared, and so is my Choctaw
friend, and there is no need for him to add the otherworldly to our
worries--though here, I suppose, we can hardly escape _that_. For we are
inside _Nanih Waiyah_, the hill from which some Choctaw say they issued at
the beginning of time, and at this moment I am prepared to believe in
anything, giant snakes and _kwanakasha_ (a sort of supernatural dwarf)
included.

Later, on a sunlit porch, I am still shaken, but I am becoming the
anthropologist again. I've written down what I felt, but that will be
filed away with other such things. The loss of a friend in a senseless
knife fight or the feeling of triumph when I score a point in _kapucha
