Hello All!
Hе знаю, что там кинул Igor Lanskoy (до меня доползла только 5-я часть, все
остальное по дороге кто-то сгрыз), но судя по объему это была какая-то из
древних альфа-версий. Если модератор изъявит согласие, могу кинуть релизную
версию (это будет около 60 ююшек) - то есть ту версию, которая пошла в печать.
Если с той поры уже появились какие-то баг-фиксы, может, пусть их тоже
кто-нибудь кинет?

Or have you found your excursions into the Internet to be less than
satisfying? Is this whole thing hyped beyond limits? Are you afraid to surf
the Net without a learner's permit? Do you not know what I meant when I said
*bookmark this*?
The Internet in many ways is a brave new world. It's also just an extension
of the same old one. There's plenty of hype, but also some meaning in the
media blitz.
Any definition of what the Internet is will probably say something about
computers connecting to other computers. Sure, technically that's true. But
the reality of it is that its people connecting to other people.
I'm the type of user that doesn't care about what makes my drive hard and my
modem blink. They are tools that I want to use easily and efficiently to
communicate with. For most writers, nerds excepted, that's the way we look at
the Internet, too.
We are already using the Net to uncover markets, get software, find
information, submit stories, correspond and promote ourselves. Writers have
always exchanged information, bridged geographic differences, debated, formed
support groups, found like minds, friends and lovers through text. We just do
it faster and easier electronically.
AOL is a good place to begin. It's easy, friendly and has some decided
advantages over other entry points for beginners. It's got good email
service, easy live chatting, and, despite all, some great communities of
people. Then again, as Steve Case, AOL's president, himself said recently in
an interview in "Broadcast & Cable," AOL's slogan could be: "AOL: Just a
little less pathetic than the other guys."
My first look at the World Wide Web came through AOL's Nyetscape, I mean
browser. It didn't take upper level cognition to realize 1) Hey, I want more
of this; 2) This browser sucks; 3) How can they charge $2.95 an hour for
something you can get unlimited and uncensored from a local independent
service provider for $20 a month or less?
So, once I abandoned AOL (for websurfing at least,) I really began to use the
vast amount of free information on the Internet. I use it daily and have just
begun to skim the surface.
Where's it going? That may be the best thing about the Internet. It's an
uncontrollable monster. The Internet is SciFi. Look at the plot: Decades ago
the Defense Department set up a network of computers with the intention of
protecting vital information from the dreaded spectre of nuclear attack.
Researchers expanded on it so scientists could better communicate. Commercial
gateways followed in the eighties and the Internet was born. Originally
designed for maybe two million people in the world comfortable with the
absurdities of UNIX, the World Wide Web even three years ago was usable
mostly by particle physicist s and geeks who designed memory chips in their
dreams. But once it was simplified to the level of people like me, it
proliferated.
Like all good monsters it grew more rapidly than it's creators anticipated.
That's the First Rule of the Internet: Everyone knows the computer business
changes ten times faster than, say, the automotive industry. The Internet
changes ten times faster than computing. What I say today can be outmoded
tomorrow.
So, even as misguided and evil politicians, corporate demi-gods and Darth
Gates seek to capture or put limits on the monster, it just keeps growing. It
surprises everyone. No one, for instance, predicted Netscape's sudden
dominance including Bill Gates and Steve Jobs.
The most exciting things about the Webmonster? It's very ubiquity. It's
already everywhere. Anything that pervasive is damned interesting. It also
has the ability to foster innovation and creativity. Even Microsoft can't
figure out a way to dominate it. The web is something of a secret weapon. To
some extent it can neutralize the advantage of the big guy, the huge
