RESULTS OF SAMPLE CHAPTER SURVEY
Over 250 people responded to the sample chapter survey begun in last
month's DRIN, and the votes were around 9 to 1 to keep the sample chapters
whole rather than cut them down to sample sections of 3-5 pages. So don't
despair, chapters will still be forthcoming every month. If you wanted a
shorter sample, just read (or print) the first few pages. Thanks for
participating--I've mailed out BUNCHES of free books!

NEW SURVEY: GOPHER SITE, ANYONE?
Now I'm on a quest for knowledge. Does anyone out there still use our
gopherspace on Panix? (gopher://gopher.panix.com) If everyone's
converted to the Web, I'm going to stop keeping it up every month, so let
me know: ekharris@randomhouse.com. No free-book promises this time
around, I'm out of packing tape!

IN DEPTH================================================================
R. A. Salvatore, bestselling author of fantasy novels for TSR (and soon
for Del Rey!), tells us about how he got drawn into the world of Tarzan...
I was flattered when Steve Saffel asked me to get involved in the Tarzan
project, but I didn't jump at the offer. It had nothing to do with the
opportunity itself, or with any other conflicting projects, or with any
elitist attitude I might hold about novelizations. In fact, I've always
wanted to try a novelization (and despite what some high-sniffing critics
might say, my TSR novels were NOT novelizations!).
My hesitance was simply due to the fact that, where Tarzan was concerned,
my experiences were few indeed. I don't know if I was born too late or
too early, but somehow, Tarzan had never a big part of my literary life.
I'd seen a few of the shows and movies, of course, but I hadn't read many
Tarzan stories. Now don't get me wrong, I love the works of Edgar Rice
Burroughs and consider him to be one of the all-time masters. But my
favorite Burroughs' tales take place at the Earth's core, not in the
African jungle.
"Too bad it wasn't Pellucidar," I told Steve.
"But Bob," he interrupted, "in this story, Tarzan goes to Pellucidar!"
Ah, there's the rub.
The screenplay (which was full of energy) arrived soon after, along with
the director's cut of the TV movie (which was quite cool), and I set to
work.
A funny thing happened as I got to know this hero named Tarzan. Steve had
told me that he had thought of me for the project because the
characterization of Tarzan--the sophisticated, post-Lord Greystoke
Tarzan--reminded him of some of my heroes, most notably, the dark elf,
Drizzt Do'Urden. He was right on; Tarzan's voice came to me as soon as I
started banging away at the keyboard. He's the classic romantic (and
fantasy) hero: an outcast by choice, a ranger by trade. I couldn't help
but fall in love with this guy. (I guess I've just added a whole bunch of
my Burroughs collection to my "books-to-read" list.)
Throughout the project, I watched Tarzan fighting the battles (in my mind,
not in the movie!), and heard and empathized with his every inner
struggle. Truly, writing the book was a breeze, fun and exciting,
insightful and energizing, and it came off without a single problem.
Well, maybe one.
Does anybody out there know how to spell Tarzan's signature yodel?

Q & A===================================================================
Q: I am an illustrator of science fiction and fantasy subjects and am
interested in submitting material to your company.
A: You may send your portfolio to: Del Rey Art Director, 201 East 50th
St., NY, NY 10022 USA. We find new cover artists through agent
submissions, portfolios sent from the artists themselves, and art shows at
conventions.
Q: What are the names of the first three Star Wars books? The Trilogy
(STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, and RETURN OF THE
JEDI) are volumes 4, 5, and 6. At the beginning of STAR WARS there
is an exerpt from the Journal of the Whills, which it says is the
first saga. Is there another name for this book, or is it in print?
A: Those books donуt exist. The trilogy volumes you list are the first in
the Star Wars series, even though theyуre numbered 4 through 6. The idea
is that the next movie/book will be 1-3; then the next trilogy will be 7-9.
Q: I am interested in knowing when volumes three and four of the
_Worldwar_ series by Harry Turtledove willl be available.
A: Book Three, TILTING THE BALANCE, is out now in hardcover. Book Four,
STRIKING THE BALANCE, will be published in December in hardcover along
with the paperback of Book Three.
